What 2022 Kilmore Cup Day
Where Kilmore Racing Club – East St, Kilmore VIC 3764
When Sunday, November 20, 2022
First Race 1:30pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

Racing heads to the Kilmore Racing Club on Sunday afternoon for an eight-race program on the club’s marquee day. The track is currently rated a Soft 7, but with plenty of rain forecast in the area on Saturday and Sunday, we expect to be racing on a Heavy track come the opening event at 1:30pm AEDT. The rail remains in the true position all the way round for Kilmore Cup Day.

Kilmore Cup Top Tip: Keats

The Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m) takes centre stage on Sunday afternoon with a field of 12 to compete for the $200,000 on offer. Despite lacking a bit of class compared to some of his rivals, the Gavin Bedggood-trained Keats looks perfectly placed to take out the feature. The five-year-old gelding smashed his rivals in the Peninsula Cup on a Heavy 8 at Mornington last time out, and two runs ago finished second behind the 2023 Melbourne Cup favourite, White Marlin, at Caulfield — also on a Heavy 8. We know he will handle the conditions in front of him, and considering he will be up on speed throughout, we anticipate the tactical advantage over his rivals will prove to be the difference. He is proven at 2000m, so if he can make this a genuinely run mile, we know he will see the trip out. At $7 with online betting sites, Keats looks to be a clear on-top selection in the Kilmore Cup.

Kilmore Best Bet: Movader

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Movader has found one better at both of her first two career outings, but we expect it will be third time’s the charm when she looks to break her maiden over 1200m. The three-year-old filly has been settling on speed and was only grabbed late by She’s The Sheriff on debut and then Faithful Maryanne last time out. On both occasions she put a further two lengths on the horse back in third, and with those events being run on a Heavy 8 and then a Heavy 9, we know she will handle the conditions in front of her. From barrier 10, Linda Meech will look to take up the running, and as it looks like there will be no competition for him out in front, Movader will get every opportunity.

Best Value at Kilmore: James The Great

We will be looking to head home with a big-priced winner when the Matt Cumani-trained James The Great steps out over 1200m in the last. The five-year-old is one of two runners to have even started at Kilmore in the past, and he’s the only runner in the race who has tasted success at the track. His on-pace win on the Pakenham synthetic two starts back is a good enough form reference to be competitive in a race like this. From barrier two, Fred Kersley should be able to lob the gelding on the heels of the leaders throughout, and when asked for an effort, we expect James The Great to prove too hard to hold out at any old price with online bookmakers.
