What Sandown Lakeside Races
Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
When Wednesday, November 23, 2022
First Race 1pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

The Wednesday metropolitan meeting for Victoria will be held at Sandown Racecourse, with eight races set to go around on the Lakeside course. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, and considering there is some rain on the forecast for Monday and Tuesday, we don’t expect the track to get any better than a Soft on raceday. The rail will be in the 3m position for the entire circuit, which should favour on-pace runners. Racing will get underway 1pm AEDT.

Lakeside Best Bet: St Lawrence

In the second race of the day, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained St Lawrence will return from a two-month spell with the benefit of one jump-out under his belt, at Ararat on November 7 over 1000m. This lightly raced four-year-old gelding has won both of his careers starts to date, with his debut coming at Hastings in New Zealand before being sent to Australia, where he won his second start at Geelong over 1325m on September 15. This son of Redwood was very tough that day, sitting on pace for the entirety of the 1325m, and when he got headed by the horse on his outside, he really picked up under Mark Zahra and fought back to record an impressive one-length victory. Ben Melham should be able to sit outside the leader from barrier four, and if they don’t go hard up in front, he will be very hard to get past in the concluding stages.

Best Bet

Race 2 – silks#5 St Lawrence (4)

4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Ben Melham (61.5kg)

$2.80 with Palmerbet

Lakeside Next Best Bet: Italian King

Our next best bet of the day will be the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Italian King, who has run second at both of his career starts to date. This lightly raced five-year-old gelding was very tough on pace at his most recent start before he went out for a spell, racing on speed and only going down by half a head over 1200m at Morphettville. The winner of that race, Ballynora, has gone on to win again since at Geelong, and the horse that finished third, Hopon Harry, has since won three nice races, while he has also run within a length of boom four-year-old Illation in the Listed Adelaide Guineas. Given the form of the placegetters out of this guy’s last start, it is easy to make a case for him on his return from a 13-month spell in a maiden race.

Next Best

Race 1 – silks#2 Italian King (10)

5yo Gelding | T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Blake Shinn (59.5kg)

$4.20 with Ladbrokes

Lakeside Best Value: Strike Eagle

Our best value bet of the day will come up in race six over 1200m, where we will be siding with the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Strike Eagle. This four-year-old gelding has been good at his last two starts, winning at Warracknabeal over 1200m before finishing third last start at Donald over 1200m. This son of More Than Ready will look to cross the front of the field and sit on-pace or lead from barrier 12 on Wednesday, which should be the most favourable position to be in. If Madison Lloyd — whose 2kg claim will only help — can get this guy to the front of the field without doing much work, he should be very hard to catch at the end of 1200m.

Best Value

Race 6 – silks#4 Strike Eagle (12)

4yo Gelding | T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Madison Lloyd (a2) (61kg)
