Ascot WA betting tips

What Northerly Stakes Day
Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104
When Saturday, December 3, 2022
First Race 12:05pm AWST

Visit Ladbrokes

We go back to Ascot Racecourse this Saturday for another feature day of The Pinnacles, with a nine-race program highlighted by the Group 1 Northerly Stakes. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with some warm weather expected between Thursday and Saturday, we expect to get into the Good range by raceday. The rail will go out to the 6m position for the entire circuit, which should favour on-pace runners for most of the day. The first race will kick off at 12:05pm AWST.

Jungle Dawn Classic Tip: Sentimental Queen

Hayden Ballantyne’s six-year-old mare, Sentimental Queen, will return from a six-month spell in the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic over 1400m. This daughter of Al Maher has been given two trials over 930m and 950m at Lark Hill to get her ready for this first-up run. She has a very good record when fresh, only missing the placing one time from five starts. This girl also holds a decent record over the 1400m, recording two wins and two placings from five starts at the distance. Lucy Warwick will continue her positive association with this mare, after riding her seven times for four wins and a placing, showing that they get along very well. From barrier one on Saturday this girl should be able to kick up and lead, which should give this girl every chance to return a winner.

Best Bet: Category Three

Our best bet of the day will be the Adam Durrant-trained Category Three who will be looking to break through for her first win of the preparation after flying home to finish second at both of her starts this time in. At her most recent start, this daughter of Xtravagant was held up around the home turn and had to make two different runs, one to get into clear running room and then another to flash home and only go down by a head on the line. William Pike will stick with this mare on Saturday after riding her last start, and there is no doubt in our mind that he will be looking to keep this girl out of trouble this time and allow her to build her momentum. If she gets an ounce of luck in the final 400m and finds clear air, she will be storming home late.

Best Bet

Race 4 – silks#9 Category Three (7)

Next Best Bet: Home James

The opening race of the day will see the top two runners in race book order clashing again, but this time over 1000m, after they both debuted in the 1100m Crystal Slipper on November 19. On Saturday we will be with the Neville Parnham-trained Home James who we were with last start, where he finished second behind Soaring Solo, after doing a little bit wrong, while the winner got all the favours. This son of Maurice has a blistering turn of foot, but over 1100m he started to peak on his run in the final 100m, so now that he drops back to 1000m, we think he can flip the script. There looks to be some speedy debutants coming out of some hot trials, so if they go quick up in front, it will favour this guy even more.

Next Best

Race 1 – silks#2 Home James (10)

Best Value: Ginger Green

Our value bet of the day will come up in the last race, where Steven Wolfe will have his five-year-old gelding, Ginger Green, engaged in a Benchmark 72 over 1200m, coming off a nice win last start over 1400m on October 29. This son of Gingerbreadman has been freshened for a month before dropping back to the 1200m, so it shouldn’t be a negative that he drops back in distance for this race on Saturday. From barrier four Shaun McGruddy can have this guy off the back of the leaders in the one-one and look to peel of their backs in the home straight, where he will be very hard to run down in the concluding stages.

Best Value

Race 9 – silks#5 Ginger Green (4)

5yo Gelding | T: Steven Wolfe | J: Shaun McGruddy (57kg)
