What Moonee Valley Races

When Friday, December 9, 2022
First Race 6:10pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

As Christmas approaches, racing at Moonee Valley heats up both on the track and off it. An eight-race program is set down for decision on Friday night on a track rated a Good 4, while the rail remains in the true position for the entire circuit. Given what we saw last Friday night, the track should play fairly with no real on-pace bias for a second week running. The action gets underway at 6:10pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Riverina Cyclone

Having strung together consecutive wins on the country circuit, Matt Laurie sends his four-year-old mare Riverina Cyclone to the Moonee Valley 2040m where she looks hard to beat once again. The way she won at Seymour two starts back suggested she had above average ability and she backed that up with a strong finishing sprint at Wodonga on November 25. In the small field of eight, it would not shock to see Beau Mertens have this Frosted filly settled in the one-one and stalk the speed throughout. If afforded that luxury, Riverina Cyclone has shown that she is armed with a strong turn of foot and despite this being a step up in grade, she looks a clear best bet on Friday night.

Best Bet

Race 1 – Silk#6 Riverina Cyclone (7)

4yo Mare | T: Matt Laurie | J: Beau Mertens (58kg)

$5 with Bet365

Next Best at Moonee Valley: Chester Warrior

Fresh off a 15-week spell, the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Chester Warrior presents as one of the better bets of the night. The three-year-old gelding was defeat by less than a length on debut to the smart Thron Bone, before heading to Swan Hill and smashing his rivals in maiden company. He was thrown in the deep end when finishing last in the Listed McKenzie Stakes before going for a spell. This is much easier than two of his three starts and with Damien Oliver on board, looks set to settle outside the leader or at worst in the one-one. He showed in his maiden win that he is armed with a strong turn of foot even when up on pace and a repeat effort should be more than good enough for this Class 1 field.

Next Best

Race 7 – Silk#2 Chester Warrior (6)

3yo Gelding | T: Ben & JD Hayes | J: Damien Oliver (58.5kg)

$5 with Palmerbet

Best Value at Moonee Valley: Extreme Step

Unsure what price we will get from online bookmakers about Extreme Step in the last, but her recent form lines look one of the best to follow in the 1200m event for fillies and mares. She ran into subsequent winners Invincible Caviar and Blistering at Sale on October 5 and despite being nine weeks between runs, the Extreme Choice mare looks a great play. She draws to gain a perfect run in transit under Mick Dee and if she produce a similar turn of foot which saw her salute on the Pakenham synthetic two starts ago, then Extreme Step is sure to take some holding out in the last.

Best Value

Race 8 – Silk#2 Extreme Step (4)

4yo Mare | T: Ben & JD Hayes | J: Michael Dee (61kg)

$6.50 with Betfair
