Our Top 10 Group 1 wins of 2022

The Punt Drunk team have began the tough task of compiling our list of the Top 10 Group 1 victories in 2022, dating back to the CF Orr Stakes in February, right through to the Northerly Stakes in early December. We do this in honour of the fast-approaching Christmas and the end of the year.

If you missed last week’s edition where we unveiled 7-10, make sure to check that out before we unveil what we think were some of the better Group 1 performances of the year.

Make sure to let us know in the comment section below what your Top 10 group 1 victories of 2022 would be.

#6 Golden Rose Stakes – Jacquinot

There were not many more visually pleasing wins than what Jacquinot put forward in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes.

Having settled towards the rear of the field under Damian Lane, the Rubick colt managed to weave a passage through the field to get to the extreme outside where he unleashed one of the best finishing sprints you will ever see.

In the race were two subsequent Group 1 winners, In Secret (Coolmore Stud Stakes) and Golden Mile (Caulfield Guineas) which goes to show just how good the win was having given both those Godolphin runners a tactical advantage in the running.

It is one of those victories that will be remembered for a long time.

Did it help we were on him? Absolutely.

#5 Northerly Stakes – Amelia’s Jewel

If you live on the East Coast of Australia, you would probably agree that Anamoe is the best horse in the country.

If you ask the Sandgropers over in the West, they will say their filly Amelia’s Jewel is.

This three-year-old filly continues to find a way to win and her spring campaign was capped off with a breathtaking win in the Northerly Stakes.

Bookies had the race down to two, with Amelia’s Jewel and Patrick Carbery up against Cascadian and the all-conquering Cascadian.

Her main rival simply got too far out of his ground and once Carbery had Amelia’s Jewel off the fence and settling in the first half a dozen, the race was all but over.

Look out for Amelia’s Jewel in the Autumn Carnival’s on the East Coast, this girl is something special!

#4 Newmarket Handicap – Roch ‘N’ Horse

How can anyone forget the monumental boilover Roch ‘N’ Horse caused in the Newmarket Handicap back in March?

In a race which contained the likes of Home Affairs, September Run, Masked Crusader, Lost And Running, Snapdancer and Artorious this little Kiwi mare was given absolutely no hope.

Until she won at $101 and floored every punter around the country.

Under the care of Mike Moroney, the sprinting sensation saluted in one of the biggest upset in recent times and in doing so, handed jockey Patrick Moloney his first Group 1 win in the saddle.

Roch ‘N’ Horse would return to the Flemington 1200m during the Melbourne Cup Carnival where she would once again cause an upset, this time getting the better of the best sprinter in the world Nature Strip in the Champions Sprint.

We tip our lid to you Roch ‘N’ Horse.
