Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 5, 2023 Journalists Share Posted January 5, 2023 What The Wave Raceday Where Gold Coast Turf Club – Racecourse Dr, Bundall QLD 4217 When Saturday, January 7, 2023 First Race 12:03pm AEST Visit Ladbrokes Gold Coast Turf Club will host a bumper nine-race card for its first race day of 2023, with the highlight event of the day being the $250,000 The Wave over 1800m. Currently the track is rated a Soft 6, however, there is good, warm weather forecast for Friday and Saturday, which should help dry out the track and see us race on a Good surface come race one on Saturday. The rail will be in the True position for the entire circuit, which should see the track to play as fair as possible for most of the day. The first race on The Wave race day will jump at 12:03pm AEST. The Wave: The Cunning Fox The feature race at the Gold Coast on Saturday will be the $250,000 The Wave, where a full field of 13 runners will battle it out over 1800m. Along with the $250,000 prize pool, there is an added $200,000 bonus for the winner if they are a Magic Millions qualified horse. Our top tip will be The Cunning Fox from the Patrick Payne yard who has been racing against the older horses in Benchmark races in Victoria this preparation. This son of Reliable Man has been good without winning in his three runs this campaign, and now that he drops back to his own age level at a suitable distance, he looks to have a strong chance to finally break through for a win. His form from last preparation was very strong, running second in the Listed Galilee Final and Listed VRC St Leger in Victoria, which is well above the grade he will meet on Saturday. Craig Williams will take the ride on Saturday and from barrier 14 we expect to this gelding drop to the back of the field, and look to run on powerfully to stake his claim in the concluding stages. The Wave Race 8 – #1 The Cunning Fox (14) 4yo Gelding | T: Patrick Payne | J: Craig Williams (58.5kg) $6.50 with Bet365 Best Bet: Olentia Our best bet of the day is going to be the very exciting filly from the Chris Waller yard, Olentia. This three-year-old filly has been ultra-impressive at her first two race starts, winning both by an average of 4.3 lengths over 1200m. This daughter of Zoustar looks to have a bright future ahead of her and Saturday sets up to be another nice race for her to bring up a hattrick of wins. At both of her wins to date, this girl has settled just off the speed and made her way to the outside to run on powerfully and run away from her rivals to win eased down over the final 50m. Jim Byrne will jump back aboard on Saturday after riding her on debut and from barrier three he should be able to choose where he wants to settle in the running. As long as Byrne keeps her out of trouble, she should be winning again. Best Bet Race 6 – #9 Olentia (3) 3yo Filly | T: Chris Waller | J: Jim Byrne (54.5kg) $1.85 with Betfair Next Best Bet: Arentee The Rising Stars 3YO & 4YO Colts, Geldings and Entires will feature the very smart Arentee from the Chris Meagher yard, who has been impressive in his last three runs this preparation. This son of Territories could have won three on the bounce if it wasn’t for Tick Tock Queen nosing him out in a driving finish two starts back in The Gateway at Eagle Farm, however, his last win could have been the best win of his career, where he settled second last and weaved a passage through the field to win by a head on the line at Doomben over 1200m. In the final 100m of his last start, he indicated to us that he was looking for more than 1200m, which means the 1300m he gets on Saturday should be perfect for this up-and-coming galloper. Kerrin McEvoy will be legged aboard for this next start, which should only be seen as another positive for this guy and we expect him to be flashing home late to feature in the finish. Next Best Bet Race 7 – #1 Arentee (13) 4yo Gelding | T: Chirs Maegher | J: Kerrin McEvoy (59kg) $6.50 with Ladbrokes Best Value: Cassimir We will be playing in the first race of the day, as we think that Saturday could be the day for Cassimir from the Kelly Schwieda yard to finally break his maiden. This son of Hellbent has finished second at his last four starts and in those runs, this gelding has continually found one better than him. He will rise to the 1200m for the second time in his career and we think that the timing is perfect, after he flashed home behind Hidden Wealth last start over 1050m, showing that the extra 150m will suit him down to the ground. James Orman will have a bit of a task on his hands to get this guy into a nice spot from barrier 15, but hopefully he can jump neutral and find the back of one of his rivals in the three-wide running line. If he gets even luck and has clear air with 300m to go this gelding will have every chance to break his maiden at massive odd with online bookmakers.
