Warrnambool Racing Club will host the Port Fairy Cup and Koroit Cup on Sunday, with both of those races being the highlight events on the eight-race card. The current track rating of a Good 4 looks like it will hold until Sunday, with warm weather forecast for the Warrnambool area all weekend. The rail will be in the +3m position for the entire circuit, when racing gets underway at 1:20pm AEDT.

Here are our free Warrnambool tips for Sunday, January 8, 2022.

Port Fairy Cup Tip: Yulong Patrol

The $40,000 Port Fairy Cup over 1400m will be one of the feature events for the day at Warrnambool. The Andrew Bobbin-trained Yulong Patrol looks a very good chance to go back-to-back after an impressive win at Morphettville on December 31 over 1519m. This seven-year-old gelding had to carry 60.5kg on that day, but thanks to a great ride from Barend Vorster, this guy proved way too strong over the final 100m to win by 1.6 lengths. Even though this son of Society Rock is dropping back in distance to the 1400m on Sunday, he is proven at the distance, recording two wins and three placings from 11 attempts. From barrier six, Harry Coffey should have him settled at the rear of the field and look to run on, just like last start.

Koroit Cup Tip: Harbourmaster

The second of the Cup features will be the Koroit Cup over 1700m and Harbourmaster from the Henry Dwyer yard will be very hard to beat, coming off a strong win at Sandown on December 21 over 1600m. This son of Cable Bay was very impressive when sitting dead last from the jump until the field hit the home turn, before making his way to the very outside and letting down with a booming finish to run over the top of the leaders and pull away in the final 100m. The step up in distance to the 1700m looks to be perfect for this galloper as he gets stronger-and-stronger the further he goes in his races this preparation. Mitchell Aitken has ridden this gelding at his last five starts, recording three wins, and a close second, so the fact that he makes the trip to Warrnambool on Sunday, fills us with more confidence, ahead of his toughest test to date.

Best Bet at Warrnambool: Awol

The second race of the day will be a Maiden Plate over 1400m and it will also feature our best bet in the form of Awol for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace yard. This son of Sweynesse had plenty of excuses on debut at Sandown over 1200m, where he raced a bit keen and sat three-wide the trip, before fading out of the race at the 300m mark to run last. Before making his debut, this gelding was good in two jump-outs at Mortlake and Ararat over 800m and 850m, which garnered plenty of support for his debut run. He will take improvement from his debut run and would have learnt a lot, which should hold him in good stead going from a metropolitan maiden to a country Maiden Plate. John Allen will make the trip to Warrnambool to continue his connection with the gelding after riding him on debut.

Race 2 – Silk #1 Awol (8)

3yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: John Allen (58kg)

Next Best at Warrnambool: Beauleica

The first leg of the quaddie will feature a lightly race six-year-old gelding, Beauleica, who is coming off a very nice win at this track and trip on November 27, where ran out an easy 2.25-length victor. This son of Brazen Beau will jump from Maiden grade to a Benchmark 64 Handicap, which is never easy for an inexperienced horse, but he seems to have a lot of ability going off his maiden win. He showed a nice turn of foot to make a sustained run around the outside of the field three and four wide, before running away from the race favourite and leader with 200m to go. If this guy can settle mid-field on the outside and make a similar sustained run in the final 400m, we should see this gelding go very close to winning again.
