Logan Street Lion fended off the late-charge of Mahagoni to score a strong win in the Cleanaway Handicap (1800m) at Rosehill on Saturday for trainer Chris Waller to land the second win of his current campaign.

In five starts this preparation, the gelding has been out of the top three just once and the lightly raced son of Tavistock looks to have further upside for his connections.

Raced by Go Racing, Logan Street Lion enjoyed a good run in fourth under Tommy Berry and travelled sweetly when presented at the top of the straight.
Mahagoni came from well off the pace and looked an ominous three mid-stretch but Logan Street Lion lifted late under his top weight to give his rival few excuses.

In the process he advanced his career record to five wins from 12 starts with A$230,000 in prizemoney.

“It was a good run last start (when second to Mach Schnell),” Waller said.

“He looked the winner until the David Payne horse Mahagoni presented. I thought he had us cold. But to our horse’s credit I think he lifted when it joined us, and it was a good fight to the line.

“That’s a good quality I feel. He is slowly finding his way and it is a good step forward today.

“For a five-year-old he has taken a long time to find his rhythm at this level and let’s hope there are a few more.”

By Tavistock out of the Group Three placed Stravinsky mare Napa Sky, Logan Street Lion was purchased by Albert Bosma’s Go Racing for $120,000 as a yearling from the Karaka Book 1 draft of Te Runga Stud.
