First Race 12:07pm AWST

Visit Ladbrokes

It’s Perth Cup Day on Saturday afternoon after being re-scheduled from New Year’s Day and we’ve got a competitive 10-race program to dissect. We’ve got you covered with a full preview of this year’s Perth Cup so be sure to check that out.

Outside of the Group 2 feature it’s still a very strong card with the Listed level Miss Andretti Stakes (1100m) and plenty of quality undercard racing throughout. The rail moves out +6m the entire circuit for the meeting and while currently listed as a Soft 5 track, we think with a drying forecast it’s more likely to be in the good to firm range come the first race scheduled to get us underway at 12:07pm AWST.

Miss Andretti Stakes: Wilchino

The Summer Scorcher form looks the strongest coming into this $125,000 Listed level sprint feature and we think the Daniel Morton-trained Wilchino is due some luck on Saturday afternoon. She was outstanding in behind race rival Hows The Serenity when getting stuck in behind the winner turning for home and never real saw fresh air, and proceeded to only be beaten 1.3 lengths. This time from barrier four and a chance to sit one off the rail rather than getting caught in behind runners, we’ll be seeing the best of this lightly raced six-year-old out of Maschino. Chris Parnham sticks on Saturday and with a welcome 1.5kg swing on the favourite here, Wilchino looks one of the better bets of the day provided he gets the breaks in this small field.

Best Bet: Valsassina

We look to find our best bet of the afternoon early in the card and it comes in the second race of the program. We’ve landed with Valsassina in this three-year-old 1200m contest and we think this Simon Miller-trained filly has plenty of upside moving forward and should be finding the line well again on Saturday afternoon, when bouncing from a strong win at Belmont on January 4. She got back and was simply too good for her rivals on that occasion clearing out to win well by 3.3 lengths. Now coming to Ascot for the first time, Valsassina should be suited by conditions with a drying surface and a strong tempo on paper when looking to circle the field from barrier six. Patrick Carbery sticks on this daughter of Choisir and we think he can make it back-to-back wins on Saturday afternoon.

Best Value: Corn Cob

It’s hard to believe this is the first time Corn Cob has seen the 1600m and we think he’s a great each-way chance in an open race on Saturday afternoon. He comes here on the one-week back up from Geraldton when ridden against his own pattern of racing to be beaten 0.8 lengths over the 1400m. Now stepping up in trip this gelding out of Awesome Rock should look to be ridden with cover throughout this contest and should be finding the line very strongly for Natasha Faithfull who has had 10 starts for five wins and another minor placing on Corn Cob. He’s got an excellent strike rate as well, so if the mile does suit him, we’re happy to take a chance on him at a good price with online bookmakers.
