Sha Tin racing tips

What Sha Tin Races
Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Tai Po Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong Kong
When Sunday, January 15, 2022
First Race 1pm HKT (4pm AEDT)

Visit Ladbrokes

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin Racecourse this Sunday afternoon for a competitive 10-race program. We come from a Happy Valley meeting on Wednesday night dominated by Silvestre de Sousa riding four winners, including the January Cup feature at Group 3 level. There isn’t any Group racing this weekend, however we do see some key gallopers step out for the four-year-old series for later in the season.

We’re back on the A course on Sunday afternoon and we should see a relatively fair surface provided we get similar conditions to what we had on Hong Kong International Races on December 11. There is some chance of scattered showers but we’re thinking a good to firm track is more likely heading into Sunday with racing getting underway at 1:00pm HKT (4:00pm AEDT)

Best Bet at Sha Tin: Golden Express

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Golden Express, and he comes back for the penultimate race at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon after a month away from the track. He ran on Hong Kong International raceday and was unlucky not to be winning in his second up effort over the 1400m behind the very much in form Super Sunny Sing (who has won again since). He lead before faulting late in the piece but did enough to suggest he can find a win in Class 3, and we prefer him over the 1200m regardless of that effort. His Hong Kong debut was outstanding running time behind Victor The Winner on November 20 and he only needs to be replicating that finish to be closing off best here. We lose Zac Purton but gain an in-form Silvestre de Sousa who takes the reins after a lovely tick-over trial between runs to boot. It looks a pretty open race, so we expect to get a good price with online bookmakers when markets open on Sunday morning.

Next Best Bet at Sha Tin: Multisuper

In the fourth race on the program we’ve found our next best bet of the day with Mulitsuper who looks ready to win third-up in his first campaign. This son of Vancouver has found the minor money in both his Sha Tin efforts over the 1200m and has been holding on strongly to the line in both, in particular, his last start run beaten by race rival Super Highway by just 0.3 of a length when just petering out in the finish. He sat outside the leader on that occasion and stuck on bravely running good time in the process. On Sunday drawn barrier three, we think Multisuper should get a relatively uncontested lead throughout. With fitness on his side, the boosting appointment of Zac Purton, and a suitable racing pattern, Multisuper can go from barrier to post.

Next Best Again at Sha Tin: Let’s Do It

Let’s Do It is due some luck and we feel this is his best chance to find the winners enclosure after some unfortunate barrier draws this preparation. He’s a long standing Hong Kong maiden but he looks ready to win here dropping back into Class 4 after two terrific efforts in Class 3 company. We’re taking him on his Class 4 effort three starts back however when running second 0.3 lengths behind Turquoise Alpha on November 6. On that occasion Zac Purton tried to cross from barrier 12 and couldn’t get a spot before holding on to finish closer than many would’ve expected. His performances up in grade since have had plenty of merit, so seeing him come back to more suitable company can see Let’s Do It get a much-deserved win for David Hall and connections. Matthew Poon should find a prominent spot in running before putting it to his rivals turning for home and should be hard to beat.

Best Value at Sha Tin: Owners’ Praise

Owners’ Praise is an interesting galloper on Sunday afternoon in the fifth race as he makes his Sha Tin debut after two electrifying efforts at Happy Valley in his first preparation. Both races have seen this four-year-old out of Toronado get too far back in the field before storming home to find the black book for most punters. However, this time heading to Sha Tin over the 1400m, we should be seeing the best of this guy and we’re hoping he slips under the radar of price-makers when markets open. He steps up to the 1400m for the first time which only looks a positive as it takes him a long time to wind up, so the bigger track at Sha Tin looks optimal as well. He may get back in the ruck, but we’re confident his ability can overcome the tricky map.
