Ascot Racecourse is one of two metropolitan horse racing venues in Western Australia and is owned and operated by Perth Racing.

Known in previous years as the Railway Racecourse or “The Grand Old Lady” Ascot Racecourse is home to plenty of feature racing late in the season with Group 1 features such as the Railway Stakes, Winterbottom Stakes and The Northerly (Formerly Kingston Town Classic).

Since opening operations in 1853, Ascot racecourse is one of the oldest operating horse racing tracks in Australia and holds a staggering 50+ Meeting’s a year.

Ascot Racecourse usually operates for six-month at a time and starts in mid-October finishing in late April of every racing season.

Ascot Racecourse address & how to get there

Ascot Racecourse is located at 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 and is approximately 8km east of Perth’s central business district.

If you’re heading to the races from the Central Building District there’s plenty of options for patrons to make there way to Ascot Racecourse. Of course, you could elect to take a Taxi or Uber to the track or drive yourself, which is the fastest way of attending the races, if you head east on State Route 51 and turn onto Route 55, you’ll be just 300m from the track.

If that’s not a viable option, you can always find public transport going to and from the track as the bus and trainlines can take you directly to Ascot Racecourse via Fremantle Station or if further to the north get a connecting train from Warwick station. Once arriving at The Railway Station it’s only a seven-minute walk and you will be arriving on course.

Ascot racetrack specifications & details

Ascot Racecourse has a circumference of 2,022m with a home straight of 294m.

Most of the starting points around the track start from a chute, including the starts from the 1200m, 1400-1600m, 2400m and finally the 3200m with jockeys needing to navigate these starting points to find the running rail throughout these contests.

Major Races Held At Ascot

Ascot Racecourse is home to three Group 1 races in the season and culminates in the Northerly Stakes in December while the Railway Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes are in the weeks prior leading up to the weight-for-age 1800m contest.

The Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) has produced an honour roll of quality sprinting superstars over since its inception in 1952, including Miss Andretti (2005), Takeover Target (2008), Ortensia (2009/2011) and Buffering (2013/2015). It provides a good option for owners late in the year now as well, with $1,500,000 worth of prizemoney on offer. It also takes place after New South Wales feature, the Everest, and Victoria’s Champions Sprint which both take place in October/November.

Plenty of horses look to do the Railway Stakes (1600m) and The Northerly (1800m) double as well late in the year, with Better Loosen Up (1989), Old Comrade (2001), Modem (2004) and Sniper’s Bullet (2009) the only gallopers to produce the amazing feat.

Other feature races at Ascot Racecourse include the Perth Cup (2400m) and Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) both for the open ages, while three-year-old features include the WA Guineas (1600m) and WA Derby (2400m).
