Evening racing heads back to Canterbury Park on Friday for a competitive seven-race program kicking off at 6:15pm. It’s difficult to determine what conditions we’ll be getting, but with the track currently listed as a Good 4 and some rain about, we could find ourselves on a Soft surface come the opener. The rail has moved out +6m the entire circuit, and with the chance of some wet weather, we’ll be looking for the rail to be hot early before gallopers getting off the inside late in the card.

Best Bet: Citizenship

We’re excited by the prospect of finally seeing Citizenship on Friday night and we think he’s a clear best bet of the evening with his trial form. This son of Lord Kanaloa won two trials at Cranbourne before having his final tick-over trial at Rosehill on January 12 when running into third by 1.8 lengths. It showed us he’s going well enough to be competitive on debut and there’s been some noise surrounding this three-year-old for some time, so we’re hopeful they finally step him out at Canterbury on Friday night. He draws to either lead or sit in behind the tempo in what looks like a two horse affair with Step Aside the other clear chance in the race. We’re hoping Tim Clark can stalk James McDonald’s mount everywhere he goes before proving too strong on Citizenship. Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have taken their time with him, but this looks like a terrific chance to debut a winner.

Next Best: Latenighttoughguy

It took a ride of the day from Nash Rawiller to get Latenighttoughguy home first-up and we think he can win again at Canterbury in the penultimate. This Hong Kong import has shown plenty so far since arriving in Australia both at the trials and his first-up performance on December 28 at Gosford. His win was impressive at Rawiller weaved a passage from the back of the field on a slow tempo to get this gelding by Written Tycoon off the canvas to score. That was a 1000m contest on that occasion but on Friday we’ll see him step up to the 1100m and finds another nice race going up to BM72 level. We lose Nash but gain the world’s best in James McDonald, and from barrier three our guy should find a perfect spot just in behind the speed before producing a similar turn of foot to his first-up performance. If he does, he’ll win.

Best Value: Arnold

Arnold is a galloper that started this preparation with big expectations and it’s safe to say he’s been underwhelming so far. This looks like his best chance to produce his best however as we see him step up in trip and drop back in grade to a more suitable BM72 despite the task of carrying 60kg. His last performance on December 31 when beaten 5.8 lengths was better than the margin suggests as he was held up at a crucial stage and found a race where nothing really made inroads from the back of the field. This son of Hinchinbrook looks a staying type to us and looks ready to be hitting the line stronger than he has in his first couple of starts this prep. Brenton Avdulla draw nicely in barrier seven and should be looking to find the one-by-one before skipping clear of his rivals at an each-way quote with online bookmakers.
