Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 19, 2023 Journalists Share Posted January 19, 2023 The $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) trophy remained in Queensland with Tony Gollan’s undefeated filly Skirt The Law putting a street on the Sydney raiders at the Gold Coast. The Magic Millions Day card was abandoned last Saturday due to heavy rainfall and an unsafe racing surface with the remaining eight events on the program rescheduled to run on Thursday. One of those was the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2023 where Skirt The Law made history winning off a 47 day turn around. “We haven’t raced for nearly seven weeks now,” Gollan told Channel 7 post-win. “I was a bit edgy waiting a few more days. “But you’ve got to have faith in your horse. “She’s done everything right all prep, and have a look at her today, she’s won super.” The emerging daughter of Better Than Ready won her opening two starts in the summer at Doomben by a combined margin of over seven lengths. She franked that form on the seven-week turnaround leading the all-filly trifecta in the Magic Millions Classic. Her regular rider Ryan Maloney worked hard to get down to the 55kg to continue associations and gave her a perfectly-timed ride on the $170,000 Magic Millions purchase. The eventual winner was quick into stride and got a gun run throughout settled just off the speed in fourth, moving to the centre of the course on the straight before hitting the lead inside the final furlong. Once in the clear, Skirt The Law went to another level running away and extending her lead to have 1.5 lengths to spare on the line over the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes winning Zoustar filly Platinum Jubilee. In third having made up all the ground from near last in the eye-catching run of the race was the fellow Waterhouse/Bott runner Summer Loving who was third in the $1 million Golden Gift last November. Gollan and connections could now be eying a Sydney trip over the autumn chasing the juvenile riches of the autumn with their now three-time winning filly. Skirt The Law has firmed into a $15 all-in chance in futures markets on the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), held at Rosehill on March 18, through Ladbrokes.
