What Elwick Stakes Day
Where Elwick Racecourse – 6 Goodwood Rd, Glenorchy TAS 7010
When Sunday, January 22, 2023
First Race 12:55pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

Hobart Racecourse will host its annual Elwick Stakes Day this Sunday, with the highlight events being the Listed Elwick Stakes for the two-year-olds, the $100,000 Summer Cup and the $75,000 Thousand Guineas. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday we could see an even softer track come race day. The rail will be out in the +10m position for the entire circuit, which may suit on-speed runners early. The first race will jump at 12:55pm AEDT.

Elwick Stakes Tip – Cairns

The $125,000 Listed Elwick Stakes will feature eight two-year-olds, with all four of the runners with race experience meeting at least once throughout their career. The unbeaten two-year-old filly Cairns, from the Barry Campbell yard, was very impressive on debut on December 14, when she defeated Needs Sugar, Thoros Of Myr and Encounter Sphere over 1100m at Launceston. This daughter of Stratosphere showed in her only start to date that she is very professional and has good barrier manners and speed, which is rare for a two-year-old on debut. From barrier four, Anthony Darmanin should have this girl on speed with Thoros Of Myr, who will also look to find the lead. Once they hit the home turn, we should see this filly kick away from the gelding, just like she did on debut.

Thousand Guineas Tip – Jaguar Stone

After running in the Tasmanian Guineas and taking on the boys last start, Jaguar Stone will drop back to her own sex in the $75,000 Thousand Guineas. This three-year-old filly finished fifth last start, but she was the best-performing filly in the race by some way and was beaten by four geldings. Before running in the Guineas, this daughter of Spieth was beaten by Bello Beau at her last three starts, who went on to run a close second in the Guineas, so that form looks to be the best reference for this race on Sunday. Troy Baker has ridden Jaguar Stone at all five of her starts this preparation, filling us with more confidence that he will have this girl in the right position from barrier two and give her every chance.

Summer Cup Tip – Travelling Gigolo

The second of the co-features will be the $100,000 Summer Cup for the stayers over 2200m. We’ll be siding with the Scott Brunton-trained Travelling Gigolo, who ran second last start over 2100m in the Brighton Cup at this track on January 6. This five-year-old gelding was only warming up with 300m to go in the 2100m event, so even though he hasn’t been to the 2200m before, we expect him to run it out strongly and finish with that burst he showed recently. Now that this son of Globetrotter is third-up and has a run at 1650m and 2100m under his belt, he should be at peak fitness for this run. David Pires will stick from last start and will be hoping to get a better run in transit with more luck from back in the field. If he gets the luck and a solid tempo, he will be flying down the outside late.

Best Bet at Hobart – Emily

We were with Emily at her last start when she flashed home over 1009m at Devonport on the synthetic track to finish second on January 11. The Barry Campbell runner has not finished outside the top two in any of her eight starts, showing that she is always in the finish. This daughter of Wordsmith will be third-up on Sunday and should be peaking for this race, which should see her ready to step up in distance to 1100m. If things pan out the same as they did at her last start, the extra 100m should suit her get-back-and-run-on racing style. We should see this girl get to the outside and finish strong down the outside to nab the leaders late and record her fifth win at her ninth career start.
