A homebred for Three Chimneys Farm, FIRST DEFENDER (c, 3, Quality Road–Love And Pride, by A.P. Indy) became the newest 'TDN Rising Star' with a front-running debut effort Saturday at the Fair Grounds. Sent straight to the front under jockey Tyler Gaffalione, he dueled between rivals through a sharp opening quarter in :21.48. Still sandwiched past the quarter pole, he had the most left to give and drew away from the field inside the final furlong for the clear victory as the 4-5 favorite. Quaternion (Union Rags) came home second. The 3-year-old colts covered the six furlongs in 1:10:88.  Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0.
