Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 22, 2023 Journalists Share Posted January 22, 2023 What Sha Tin Races Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Tai Po Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong Kong When Tuesday, January 24, 2023 First Race 12:30pm HKT (3:30pm AEDT) Visit Ladbrokes It’s Chinese New Year Cup Day at Sha Tin on Tuesday afternoon as the course sees a three-day turnaround after Saturday’s meeting. It’s a very competitive 11-race program with the Class 1 Chinese New Year Cup (1400m) in open company serving as the feature event. All 11 races are on the turf, with the rail moving out to the C course for the entire circuit, and we have perfect conditions for the Good to Firm track. The first race in Hong Kong is set to get underway at 12:30pm HKT (3:30pm AEDT). Chinese New Year Cup: The Golden Scenery (4) The Golden Scenery has been so consistent this preparation without winning but we think that all changes in Tuesday’s Chinese New Year Cup. He comes from the Group 3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup, which on paper for this event, looks the strongest form-line in behind Lucky Sweynesse on January 1, running into third by 2.3 lengths. Happy Healthy (the likely favourite) also comes from this race; however, we think Tuesday’s Chinese New Year Cup presents a much more genuine tempo for some back markers to come into play, as both Happy Healthy and Circuit Stellar will be burning the turf to get the leading position on the rails. The Golden Scenery can just smoke the pipe in behind the small field from barrier four and sit a lot closer in the run than he did against Happy Healthy in their previous clash. You should get a good price to boot with online bookmakers when markets open, as with Zac Purton jumping aboard Happy Healthy, the market support will be strong. Luke Ferraris has won on The Golden Scenery in the past and hopefully can get career win number six on the board for this Deep Field gelding. Chinese New Year Cup Race 8 – #4 The Golden Scenery (4) 5yo Gelding | T: Tony Cruz | J: Luke Ferraris (57.5kg) Bet with Bet365 Best Bet at Sha Tin: Baby Crystal We’ll be looking to find our best bet in the first race of the program with Baby Crystal due to break through. This will be his fifth start since debuting back in early November and all his runs have had plenty of merit. His latest effort behind Supreme Lucky on January 1 was strong sitting outside the leader before kicking clear of his rivals, all but one of course, as Supreme Lucky showed some class to win by 2 lengths on the line. Baby Crystal beat the rest of that field with another 2 lengths back to third position, so while he was beaten on the day, he proved to be cruising outside of the winner. This contest looks slightly weaker despite still being in Class 4 company and provided Baby Crystal can replicate the last start performance, he won’t be in Class 4 much longer. Zac Purton and John Size combine with this son of Per Incanto, and we think Purton will take luck out of the equation to lead throughout and break their hearts. Best Bet Race 1 – #3 Baby Crystal (7) 4yo Gelding | T: John Size | J: Zac Purton (59kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Sha Tin: A Americ Te Specso It’s that combination again with John Size and Zac Purton we think can salute with A Americ Te Specso in race number four. He was enormous last time out as a beaten favourite on January 8 running into third, a length behind Compassion Super. He drew barrier 10 on that occasion as Purton was forced to go well back in the field, before finding some back luck at the 400m marker having to check off heels before storming home. You can easily make the argument he should’ve won and this time draws a softer gate to at least be in the top half of the field turning for home. Purton elects to stick on this gelding by Per Incanto and must be confident to do so as he could’ve looked elsewhere. He should be much more prominent in the run on Tuesday and so long as Purton puts him in striking distance, he looks the one to beat. Next Best Race 4 – #6 A Americ Te Specso (5) 4yo Gelding | T: John Size | J: Zac Purton (56.5kg) Bet with Palmerbet Best Value at Sha Tin: Sight Spirit We are expecting betting sites to give us a nice each-way price about Sight Spirit in the final race on the card. He drops into Class 3 for the first time since running over this course and distance on November 6 beaten a neck when he ran into second behind Circuit Stellar. Which finds itself in the feature on Tuesday afternoon as well, so the form references he brings look strong enough and we’re willing to forgive his last effort over the 2200m at Happy Valley as he didn’t seem to run out the trip. The Packing Treadmill run prior to that was okay and now finding the class drop over the mile, everything seems to line up for Sight Spirit to find his best. Last start winners like Super Sunny Sing and Sinba should take up a significant percentage of the market and have claims here, but we’ll look to Karis Teetan to get us home in the finale of Chinese New Year Cup Day.
