Red Resistance for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott yard has taken out the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes, with Brett Prebble taking the two-year-old colt to the front and led from barrier to winning post, defeating the odds-on favourite, Kings Gambit, by just over a length.

The son of Russian Revolution jumped out of the barriers very professionally for Prebble and it wasn’t long before he found the rail and had the race favourite behind him boxed in.

Jumping as the two favourites in the market with online bookmakers, Red Resistance jumped as a $6 second favourite, behind the long odds-on favourite Kings Gambit, however, Prebble simply outrode James McDonald and took luck out of the equation.

The win gives Waterhouse her sixth Canonbury Stakes and Bott his first, and the latter spoke post-race about their colt’s performance.

“He has a lot of scope to keep improving and he’s a lovely individual, very professional once again today,” Bott said of his exciting colt.

“He had to step up in class once again against some well credentialled opposition and he responded well.

“We thought we’d come here today, get him qualified, then go through the Todman, which is the traditional lead-up path, particularly for these colts and he’s the exact type of colt who could go there and be very competitive and win a race like the Todman.

“Then he could go to the Slipper and be very competitive in that race.”

Brett Prebble has now ridden this colt at both of his starts to date, where he has been able to beat the favourite both times with superior, front running rides.

“He’s really natural, he’s big, he’s strong and gives me a feel,” Prebble said.

“I galloped him last week and didn’t think he could get beaten today.

“He’s taken natural progression from his first to second run and if he takes another step again, he’s going to be very difficult to beat.

With the result in the Canonbury Stakes, Red Resistance has come into $8 as a second-favourite in the Golden Slipper futures market and Kings Gambit has drifted out to $5 with online betting sites.
