New Zealand-bred mare Angelic Miss (NZ) (Savabeel) collected the third black-type success of her career with a brilliant late burst in Saturday’s A$125,000 Listed Scenic Blast Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.

The Savabeel mare had already won six races before Saturday’s stellar performance, headed by two Listed victories in 2021 – the Jungle Mist Classic (1200m) and Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m).

Trainer Simon Miller has raced Angelic Miss only sporadically since then, picking up a third and a fifth from two starts in June before being unplaced in the 2022 edition of the Jungle Mist Classic in her most recent appearance on November 19.

But she brought her A-game to Ascot for Saturday’s sprint feature, charging home out wide in the hands of Patrick Carbery and scoring a narrow victory over Phanta (Gingerbread Man) and Carocapo (Husson). She clocked 1:10.18 for the 1200m.

“That was really good, it was the Angelic Miss of old,” Miller said. “She just didn’t look any good when I gave her one run over the carnival (in November) – her coat was off. But with the carnival right on the doorstep, I didn’t have any room to muck around. I chanced my arm and it didn’t work.

“But after that we decided to abort straight away, put her out until she looked good again and then bring her back. She had a fair bit of residual fitness coming into today, and she won well.”

Angelic Miss has now had 19 starts for seven wins and six placing, banking more than A$350,000 in stakes.

Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Angelic Miss is out of the stakes-placed Guillotine mare Angelica Hall, who is in turn out of the multiple stakes winner Greta Hall.

Angelic Miss is raced by long-time Miller stable clients Ray Meadowcroft, Chris Chalwell and Peter Jones.
