Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 9, 2023 Journalists Share Posted February 9, 2023 What Darwin Races Where Fannie Bay Racecourse – Dick Ward Dr, Fannie Bay NT 0820 When Friday, February 10, 2023 First Race 3:02pm ACST Visit Ladbrokes There’s only five races, but the Darwin Turf Club’s meeting on Friday will be competitive with Heat 5 of the Summer Sprint Series over 1100m for the 0-76 class the feature event with $21,525 up for grabs. It should prove a tough day for punters as there are numerous chances in all five races. Up to 14mm of rain fell during the meeting at Fannie Bay last Saturday with a further 5mm falling on Sunday. No rain was recorded from Monday-Wednesday, although showers and a possible storm is the forecast for Thursday with a 90 per cent chance of rain (4-30mm) and a top temperature of 32C. Showers and a possible storm are predicted for Friday with a 100 per cent chance of rain (15-60mm) and a top temperature of 31C. The rail will be in the true position and the track will be a good dirt surface. Best Bet at Darwin: Fromthenevernever Fromthenevernever had not raced since December 2021 before returning and producing a scintillating performance on Australia Day to overwhelm his opponents over 1000m (0-64). He jumped well and settled in front before kicking clear in the home straight to win by almost three and a half lengths from Canton Kid and Bartolini. Significantly, the six-year-old gelding was clearly super fit as he won with nonchalant ease and stepping up in grade and distance should not pose a problem. The son of Bold Expectation has had five starts at Fannie Bay for three wins and two seconds, with his first ever win occurring in a 1200m maiden in his first Darwin appearance on Melbourne Cup Day in 2021. That was followed by another win over 1100m (0-58) before two seconds over 1000m (0-64) and 1200m (Class 2). Fromthenevernever was placed on five occasions in nine starts in Tasmania, Queensland and NSW before arriving in the NT, and with a first up record of 6: 2-2-1 his second up record is 4: 1-0-1. Best Bet Race 3 – #3 Fromthenevernever (8) 6yo Gelding | T: Tom Logan | J: Sonja Wiseman (58.5kg) $3.10 with Palmerbet Next Best at Darwin: Captain Hedderwick Captain Hedderwick made a hash of the start on Australia Day and was seemingly out of contention when falling well adrift in a field of six over 1200m (0-58) before winding up in the home straight to finish fourth by just under three lengths behind Nokondi, Sodbuster and Real Reason. For the seven-year-old gelding it was his first start after spending six months in the paddock and you’d have to think he would have been in the mix had he made a better start. The son of Captain Gerrard posted three straight seconds and a third over 1600m from April-June last year, and in seven starts over 1300m he has saluted three times. After winning his first race at Geelong in a 1212m maiden in July 2019, Captain Hedderwick failed to fire a shot in his next six starts in Victoria before relocating to Darwin where his record stands at 28: 5-7-4 since his debut in January 2021. Apart from carrying a similar weight on Friday, Captain Hedderwick also takes on Nokondi, Real Reason and Defence Attorney for the second straight week. Next Best Race 1 – #1 Captain Hedderwick (1) 7yo Gelding | T: Gary Clarke | J: Jarrod Todd (59.5kg) $4.20 with Neds Best Value at Darwin: Constant Cause Constant Cause is definitely knocking on the door after making it three straight seconds at Fannie Bay on Australia Day. Missed out by a nose that day when Malibu Edition prevailed over 1600m (Class 2). The four-year-old gelding will be stepping up in grade and the competition will be fierce, but the inside barrier and a 4kg drop in weight will help his cause. Quoted as a $7 hope on Wednesday, the son of Worthy Cause made his Darwin comeback on New Year’s Eve when ending up as the bridesmaid behind Zip Lane over 1300m (Class 2). A fortnight later, he was unlucky not to win when he was pipped at the post by the fast-finishing I’m A Dreamer over 1200m (0-58). Constant Cause made his Top End debut in June last year and was sixth over 1200m (Class 2). He had three starts over 1600m in July during the Darwin Cup Carnival without impressing, but it’s a different story this time as attempts to make it two wins from 23 starts. His only ever win was over 1350m at Ipswich as a two-year-old in June 2021.
