Doomben Racecourse will host a very competitive nine-race program this Saturday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with warm, drying weather forecast for Friday and Saturday in the Brisbane region, we should begin the card on a Good 4 and stay at that rating for most of the day. The rail will go back into the true position, which should give every runner a fair chance to win from anywhere. The first race will jump at 12:02pm AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben: Helluva Barty

Our best bet of the day will come up in the first leg of the quaddie, when we side with the very impressive last start winner, Helluva Barty from the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted yard. This three-year-old gelding has been unlucky at his first two career starts, going down by a combined 0.4 lengths, before returning from a three-month spell on January 11 at this track and trip to break his maiden and record an easy 3.3 length victory. This son of Hellbent returned in fine style last start and looked to have strengthened and taken a lot out of his first preparation and now that he goes into Saturday’s races second-up and fitter, he should prove very hard to beat again. Brodie Loy will stick with this gelding after breaking his maiden on him last start. Even though they have drawn barrier 14 it shouldn’t worry this gelding as he will most likely settle in the back half of the field and run on, trying to replicate his last start victory.

Next Best at Doomben: Tilianam

After recording back-to-back runner-up finishes at Doomben over 1200m and 1350m, Tilianam from the Tony Gollan yard looks as though she has found a very winnable race that should see her break through for her first victory this campaign. Last start at this track and trip, this daughter of Savabeel got the box seat and was slightly held up on the home turn, and while she was trying to get into clear air, the leader and eventual winner kicked clear setting up a winning break. This four-year-old mare ran home nicely into second and only went down by a half a length, but there is a clear argument that if she had the same run as the winner the result could have been flipped. Angela Jones will stick with this mare and even though she drops back in grade to a Benchmark 80, Jones’ 2kg claim allows her to carry 57.5kg, which means she gets in very well at the weights. With very little speed in this race, we should see Jones push this mare out of the barriers to take up the lead, and if she can travel at a moderate tempo and leave a sprint in the tank, she should be able to run away from her rivals late.

Best Value at Doomben: Maximum Output

The Stuart Kendrick-trained Maximum Output was very good finishing as a runner-up, when returning from a three and a half month spell at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m on January 20. At this geldings most recent start, he travelled nicely into the home straight and idled up to the leader, but couldn’t go on with it and may have just lacked the fitness when fresh. Now that this four-year-old son of All Too Hard will be second-up on Saturday, where his record is very good, recording a win and a third from three starts, we expect an improved performance. All four of this geldings wins have come at 1100m, but he has never been able to break through and win at the Doomben 1100m, finishing in the placings in five of his six starts. With Tiffani Brooker retaining the ride and drawing barrier one, we should see her settle this guy in the box seat and with even luck in running he should be in this race for a long way.
