Visit Ladbrokes

Elwick Racecourse will host its annual Hobart Cup Raceday, with the highlight races of the day being the Group 3 Hobart Cup and the Listed Thomas Lyon Stakes. The Hobart track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with very little rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday, we expect to be racing on a Good 4 on race day. The rail will be in the +6m position for the entire circuit. The first race on Hobart Cup Day will jump at 12:35pm AEDT. Here are our free Hobart Cup day tips and best bets.

Hobart Cup Top Tip – Ain’tnodeeldun

The feature race of the day, the Group 3 Hobart Cup, will feature a number of horses making the trip across the bass straight to take their place in this $300,000 race. We will be siding with one of these, in the form of the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Ain’tnodeeldun who is coming off a very nice victory over 2040m at Moonee Valley on January 21. This five-year-old gelding has been racing in good form this preparation, finishing in the top four at his last three starts in Benchmark 78 and Benchmark 84 Handicaps. This son of Dundeel has only raced in Group 3 company once before in his career, where he finished eighth in the Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap at Flemington in March of 2022, so he still has to prove that he has the ability to mix with Group level horses. From barrier 10 Michael Dee is expected to settle this gelding in the back half of the field and if he can produce that blistering turn of foot, we should see him flying home late to be right in the finish.

Thomas Lyon Stakes Top Tip – The Inevitable

The second of the feature races will be the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes where we have a dominant favourite in the race, who has defeated most of his rivals on multiple occasions throughout his four-race unbeaten run this preparation. The Inevitable from the Scott Brunton yard has gone to another level this campaign rattling off four straight wins at Launceston and Hobart in Open Handicaps and Listed races, carrying weight in all four of his races. For something to beat this son of Dundeel on Sunday they would have go to career peak and jump out of the ground. It looks as though only bad luck can beat The Inevitable here and with his current quote of $2 with online bookmakers, he looks to be overs. David Pires will be looking to keep his unblemished record on this gelding intact going for five wins from five rides.

Best Bet at Hobart – Charlie Bucket

Our best bet of the day will come up in the fourth race of the day, where the Glenn Stevenson-trained Charlie Bucket will be looking to record back-to-back wins after breaking his maiden in fine style with a five-length victory at Launceston on December 14 over 1400m. This lightly raced four-year-old gelding jumped nicely and pushed forward to take up an uncontested lead, before bounding clear with 300m to go, recording a soft, but impressive win. This son of Myboycharlie has been to the trials in between his last run and this Sunday’s event, winning the hit-out by 7.25 lengths. There is no doubt that this horse is feeling well in himself and has returned a stronger and better horse in his four-year-old season, which should see him go through the grades quickly this time in. Anthony Darmanin will have his first ride on this guy on Sunday and if he can get him to jump quickly from the barriers and hold the front, he will be very hard to run down in the home straight.

Best Bet

Race 4 – Silks #1 Charlie Bucket (3)

4yo Gelding | T: Glenn Stevenson | J: Anthony Darmanin (59kg)

Next Best Bet at Hobart – Princess Matoaka

The third race of the day will feature an unlucky runner who has finished second at three of her last four starts, with her first-up run this preparation being the best of those runs. The Bill & Monica Ryan-trained Princess Matoaka was made to sit three-wide with no cover when first-up at Launceston over 1200m on January 27, where she had the audacity to stick on down the home straight and only go down by just over two lengths behind the race-favourite, Muscle Up. This five-year-old daughter of Wordsmith will have taken a lot out of her fresh run and from barrier six we should see her get a much more comfortable run in transit. Brendan McCoull rode this girl at her trial before her first-up start and he will now jump back aboard for her second-up run. If she gets more luck than last start from just off the speed, she will go very close to breaking her maiden.
