Centennial Farms' LITIGATE (c, 3, Blame–Salsa Diavola, by Mineshaft) fought his way to a brave victory in Saturday's GIII Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa, sustaining a long run to pick up his first stakes win while negotiating two turns for the first time and picking up 20 Kentucky Derby points in the process. Alertly into stride from his double-digit draw, the $370,000 Keeneland September purchase drifted back to sit about midfield behind a strong pace up ahead of him. Put to a drive on the second turn, the bay colt caught the eye with a three- or four-wide sweep at the five-sixteenths pole, struck to the front with a little more than a furlong to travel and held sway late to score. Groveland (Street Sense) made good progress up the rail to be second ahead of Classic Car Wash (Noble Bird) in third. Litigate is the 20th winner at the graded level for his sire and his 44th black-type winner overall. Sales history: $370,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP. O-Centennial Farms; B-Nursery Place, Donaldson & Broadbent (KY); T-Todd Pletcher.
