Canterbury night racing tips

What Canterbury Races
Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King St, Canterbury NSW 2193
When Friday, February 24, 2023
First Race 6pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

We’re racing under lights at Canterbury Park on Friday night for a competitive eight-race program. The rail continues to move out, this time +6m the entire circuit. The track is currently listed in the Heavy range, but with some drying days ahead we think it’s more likely to be somewhere towards the Soft grading. The first race is set to get underway at 6pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Canterbury: Tu Qui Santuzza

There are plenty of dual acceptors for this meeting at Canterbury, but if Tu Qui Santuzza elects to come here, we want to be with her. She’s trialled up outstandingly well for trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott and looks ready to do something, regardless of which race they accept for. She holds nominations for Canterbury and Canberra on Friday, and if they choose the former, we feel it’s a much easier task for this daughter of Pierro. Her latest trial was the eye-catcher when running into third behind Introducing and Platinum Jubilee, who both look nice progressive types as well, with Introducing winning on debut on Wednesday. Tu Qui Santuzza was ridden along from well back, and if she brings some of that form to race day she’ll be more than competitive. Barrier one is ideal and should see her get on the back of a genuine tempo throughout before producing a stunning turn-of-foot.

Next Best at Canterbury: Pungo

The Chris Waller stable has some nice returning gallopers on Friday night, none more so than Pungo. This three-year-old burst on the scene with a nice second-up win at Warwick Farm on October 12 and then proceeded to race out of her grade in Melbourne during the spring carnival when well beaten in the Carbine Club Stakes on October 29. He went down by three lengths but looks to have trialled nicely and now finds a very suitable first-up assignment. James McDonald took the reins in his jumpout at Rosehill, where Pungo was hard held at the back of the field just to keep him fresh for this. McDonald should look to lead on this son of So You Think while looking to replicate his winning performance from last preparation. If does that, he’ll take some chasing down turning for home.

Next Best

Race 5 – silks#4 Pungo (7)

3yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (57kg)

Best Value at Canterbury: Rakamelo

Race two is one of the more competitive events on the program at Canterbury, with Chris Waller-trained horses Kazou and Demiana likely to have their admirers. That being said, we think the James Cummings-trained Rakamelo comes here in outstanding order. He finally broke his maiden status after five starts in superior company at Kembla Grange on January 31 to get into the winner’s enclosure. He now looks to BM64 grade and we think, on what we saw, he can make it back-to-back victories. He maps nicely from barrier five and should find himself in the one-by-one position throughout the 1200m. His claims only get boosted with the appointment of apprentice Zac Lloyd, who gets 2kg off his back. If he can find a spot early, he’s got a chance to put them to bed turning for home.

Best Value

Race 2 – silks#5 Rakamelo (5)

3yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: Zac Lloyd (a2) (59.5kg)

$8.50 with Palmerbet
