Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 23, 2023 Journalists Share Posted February 23, 2023 What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, February 11, 2023 First Race 12:02pm AEST Visit Ladbrokes The Brisbane Racing Club will host a very competitive nine-race program out of Eagle Farm Racecourse this Saturday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, and with a fair amount of rain forecast for Friday, we could begin racing on a Soft track with a good likelihood of an upgrade during the day. The rail will go out to the +3m position for the entire circuit, while racing kicks off at 12:02pm AEST. Best Bet at Doomben: Coup De Tonnerre Our best bet of the day at Doomben will come up in the second race as the Tony Gollan-trained Coup De Tonnerre will head to a Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2200m third-up, after running a nice third behind Kopangi over 1810m last start at Eagle Farm on February 18. This five-year-old gelding ended his spring preparation with two starts over 2200m, where he finished fourth and second, in a similar grade to what he will face on Saturday. After two solid runs to begin his autumn campaign, this son of Night Of Thunder should be hitting peak fitness and ready to win this weekend from a cosy barrier (2). Kyle Wilson-Taylor will retain the ride after having his first sit on this gelding last start, and if he can give him an identical ride on Saturday, we should see him record his fourth win over 2200m. Best Bet Race 6 – #8 Coup De Tonnerre (2) 5yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (55.5kg) $3.10 with Bet365 Next Best at Doomben: Stellar Magic The second leg of the quaddie is a very competitive race over 1050m, where all three of the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted runners are currently holding the top three spots in the market. For this race we will siding with Stellar Magic, who is currently an equal second favourite at $4.80 with online betting sites. This four-year-old mare was very good on her return to the race track last start, finishing second behind Princess Bojack by half a length over 1050m on February 1. This daughter of Star Turn has a very good fresh record with two of her three wins and four of her five placings coming when she is either first or second-up in her preparation. Samantha Collett will have her first ride on this mare on Saturday, and from barrier 10 she will have to settle in the second half of the field, which suits this girls racing style. With a lot of speed expected in this event, it should set up perfectly for a backmarker with a good turn of foot, which is what this mare has at her disposal. Next Best Race 7 – #14 Stellar Magic (10) 4yo Mare | T: Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted | J: Samantha Collett (52.5kg) $4.80 with Neds Best Value at Doomben: Roman Aureus We will be looking to blast out in the last race with a runner at double figures currently with online bookmakers, with the Brian Wakefield-trained Roman Aureus going around in the Open Handicap over 1350m. This six-year-old gelding was very good first-up when he won over 1200m in an Open Handicap at Toowoomba on December 31, before having four weeks off and then going to the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup, where he was very good finishing 2.6 lengths third behind Chaillot. If you only consider his first two starts and forget his last start, where he was caught three-wide for the entire trip and dropped back to 1200m, he looks to be right in this race as he rises back to 1350m. This son of Red Element has raced at the Doomben 1350m 11 times for five wins and five placings. James Orman will jump on board for his first ride on this guy and if he can push forward out of the barriers to hold a mid-field position, he will give this gelding every chance to return to the winners circle on Saturday.
