Steinem has returned to the races in fine style recording an impressive win in the Group 2 Weight For Age Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Sandown, defeating the 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip, who flashed home to finish second first-up.

With the saddle slipping on Josh Richards’ mount Deny Knowledge, Richards couldn’t control his mare and took up the lead and broke away to lead Keats by over six lengths, with Keats then leading the rest of the field by another three lengths before the home turn.

With the break neck speed that was set by Deny Knowledge and Keats, there was no way that they could keep going with 300m to go and they started to puncture as the swoopers, such as Steinem and Gold Trip ran over the top of them late.

After running third and second in Perth in December, this mare returned to the races with residual fitness and saw the second favourite outstay her rivals in the final 200m of the event.

2023 Peter Young Stakes Replay – Steinem

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have now brought up a double on Blue Diamond Stakes Day and Maher spoke post-race about his two runners that ran the quinella on their return to the racetrack.

“That was the idea, to have her right for the Australia Cup with the residual fitness and that’s why we didn’t go to the Perth Cup to come home and target these races,” Maher said.

“I was really confident with her this week.

“I said on radio during the week that I thought she was the one, on a good track and fast tempo, I couldn’t believe her odds.

“Johnny Allen, he rides that mare really good.”

Maher was also very complimentary of his runner-up, Gold Trip.

“The last month he’s really come on,” Maher said.

“The team have done a great job.”

After bringing up a race-to-race double John Allen spoke post-race about his win on Steinem.

“She felt as strong as I have sat on her this time around, so I’m really happy,” Allen said.

“Obviously it’s been a while since she’s won a race, so I made sure she remembered how to do it and she was good and tough today.”
