The annual campaign is all about increasing awareness about ovarian cancer, and raising funds towards research. Between February 1 and mid March money is raised for the cause every time a female driver, wearing the teal pants, wins a race. The money comes from contributions from Harness Racing New Zealand ($100), the clubs ($100), individual sponsors, public donations and more. So far 16 female drivers have won a total of 52 races, with Sarah O’Reilly leading the way with nine wins. Sisters Sheree (7) and Kerryn Tomlinson (6) are next along with Gemma Thornley (6) who had a treble at Cromwell on Sunday including a win in the day’s feature, the Fruit Bowl Cup with Franco Norton. The other winning drivers this campaign are Kirstin Green 4, Olivia Thornley, Alicia Harrison, Leah Hibell and Sam Ottley 3, Alana Cameron 2, and Amber Lethaby, Kim Butt, Crystal Hackett, Amanda Tomlinson, Katie Cox and Sheryl Wigg 1. The campaign finishes at the Timaru meeting on March 15, a day after the first ever Team Teal Harness Racing New Zealand quiz night is held at Addington. There will be a racing theme to some of the questions but it will more of a test of your general knowledge. There will teams of 4-6, entry is $10 per person. There will be also be raffles and giveaways throughout the night. Doors open at Spectators at 6 with the quiz starting at 7.
