Racing will return to Sandown Racecourse this Wednesday with a very competitive eight-race program on the Lakeside course. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with little to no rain forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, we expect to be racing on a perfect surface for the majority of the day. After racing on the Lakeside track on Saturday, the rail will be pushed out to the +3m position for the entire circuit. Racing kicks off at 3:05pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Sandown: Our Warrior

After breaking his maiden in fine style at his second race start at Kilmore on February 7, the Jerome Hunter-trained Our Warrior will go to town for the first time on Wednesday and he looks a very good bet. This three-year-old gelding finished third on debut at Moe over 1214m on January 23 where he settled towards the back of the small field and ran home nicely through traffic, before going to Kilmore and breaking his maiden as an odds-on favourite with online bookmakers. This son of Inference led all the way last start after jumping much better second-up. He kicked clear to put up a winning break in the final 200m, seeing him record a dominant 1.25-length victory over Monomakh, who has since come out and run second by the barest of margins at the same track in the same grade. Going from maiden grade to a Benchmark 64 Handicap is never easy, but if he can jump well again from barrier six with Thronton sticking, we should see a confident front-running ride on his way to recording back-to-back wins.

Next Best at Sandown: Rocket Scientist

The final race of the day will be a Benchmark 64 Handicap that will feature the very impressive debut winner Rocket Scientist from the Anthony & Sam Freedman yard. The most impressive thing about this three-year-old gelding’s win was the fact that he settled at the rear of the field, copped a bump on the home turn and still had the audacity to pick up and run over the top of the leaders late and score by 1.5 lengths with his ears pricked on the line. This son of Dundeel will only get better with race experience and his breeding suggests he will enjoy the extra 200m as he steps up to 1600m from 1406m. Barrier 14 shouldn’t be a worry for this gelding as he will get back and look to run on, just like he did on debut. There is also no worry with Blake Shinn jumping aboard for the ride, as he is coming off a Group 1 victory on Saturday and is one of the most talented jockeys in Victoria. With even luck and a solid tempo set up by the leaders on Wednesday, we could see a very smart horse make it back-to-back wins from as many starts.

Best Value at Sandown: Passione

The penultimate race of the day looks to be a very nice race for the Nigel Blackiston-trained Passione, who is dropping back from the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes to a Fillies & Mares Benchmark 70 Handicap. This daughter of Proisir will be second-up on Wednesday, making this race the exact same set up as how she won last preparation, where she won second-up over 1400m in a Benchmark 70 Handicap. Even though the form guide says she finished ninth first-up in the Bellmaine, she got no luck at all on the home turn and got shuffled to the back of the field before having to work her way to the very outside to make her run. Therefore, we are taking that as a fitness run and one to forget. With Laura Lafferty taking the ride and claiming 3kg, this five-year-old mare gets into the race with a very nice weight of 57.5kg, and from barrier four she should settle in the first half of the field and get every chance to record her third career win. At juicy double-figure odds with most betting sites, this is a nice each-way play.
