Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 1, 2023 Journalists Share Posted March 1, 2023 What Newcastle Races Where Newcastle Racecourse – 100 Darling St, Broadmeadow NSW 2292 When Friday, March 3, 2023 First Race 1:10pm AEDT Visit Ladbrokes Racing heads to the Hunter on Friday afternoon for a competitive eight-race program highlighted by the Group 3 Newcastle Stakes over 1400m. It should be supreme conditions for racing with the Newcastle track currently listed as a Good 4 surface and only a minor chance of rain heading into race-day. The first race is set to get underway at 1:10pm AEDT. Newcastle Stakes Top Tip – Cross Talk The Newcastle Stakes is a handicap event over the 1400m and we think the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Cross Talk is very hard to beat. He was first-up after a 140-day spell since the Doncaster Mile when running second behind Zeyrek on February 18 in a BM100 and was by no means disgraced considering the big preparation in the spring. He lead throughout and fitness told late with the 59kg on his back before holding off the rest of the challengers late. He drops 4.5kg for that effort and should get a relatively uncontested lead throughout, and although he’s arguably more suited to a wetter surface than he’ll find on Friday, his class should be telling late. Tim Clark will lead again on this son of Keano and have them chasing him a long way out down the Newcastle straight, it’ll be a tough watch, but we think he can kick clear of his rivals to score. He broke his maiden three starts back at Newcastle over the 1850m and did so beating race rival Frankie’s Me Dad in stylish fashion. He then ran into an airborne Ausbred Rising Sun at the same course and distance before heading to Canterbury on February 24 running third behind Infinitive when missing the start completely. He should’ve been right in the finish and this gelding out of Pierro looks to be relishing slowly stepping up in trip. The 2300m here looks ideal and from barrier six Tyler Schiller will be looking to find cover somewhere mid-field before showing his best late to fly over the top. Don Quixote looks progressive and we’re happy to side with him in the opener. Best Bet Race 1 – #2 Don Quixote (6) 4yo Gelding | T: Mark newnham | J: Tyler Schiller (59kg) $2.50 with Unibet Next Best at Newcastle – Osman We’re anticipating a strong return from Iron Man in this set weights maiden race on Friday afternoon and we’re willing to take on the short-priced favourite, Pereille. Iron Man had an impressive debut when running second in behind Stylised on September 28. He only ran a length off the progressive Godolphin galloper and was finishing off nicely. He’s back after a 156-day spell and with two outstanding barrier trials under his belt, looks ready to go over the 1200m first up. Rachel King takes the reins and should find the one-one if she wants it before powering to the line again, this time to victory.
