Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 3, 2023 Journalists Share Posted March 3, 2023 What Moruya Races Where Moruya Jockey Club – 100 Donnelly Dr, Moruya NSW 2537 When Sunday, March 5, 2023 First Race 12:55pm AEDT Visit Ladbrokes Racing heads to Moruya on Sunday afternoon for a competitive eight-race program that includes another leg of the Country Championships Qualifiers. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit and the track is currently listed as a Soft 6. The weather is favourable heading into Sunday though, so we could get an upgrade or two. The first race is set to get underway from 12:55pm AEDT. Country Championships Qualifier: Testator Silens This Country Championships Qualifier is over the 1400m and is a wide-open contest with chances scattered all over the page. Testator Silens gets the nod though with some class on his side. He returned after a short 70-day spell in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes at Randwick on February 11 and wasn’t disgraced in a quality field, finishing two lengths off Quantico. He swung up the inside running rail and was crowed for room in the straight and could’ve finished closer with some luck. He was less than a length off subsequent winner Espiona as well, so it’s holding up as good form-line, particularly in weaker grade. He’s a lightly raced five-year-old out of Star Witness and is always around the money at this level, and with a nice barrier draw in this massive field, Nick Heywood should only need some cover on the three-wide line to be competitive. Country Championships Qualifier Race 7 – #1 Testator Silens (9) 5yo Gelding | T: Luke Clarke | J: Nick Heywood (59kg) $5 with Bet365 Best Bet at Moruya: Hedge Fund We look to race three on the program for our best bet of the afternoon at Moruya as Hedge Fund looks very hard to beat. He produced a super effort first-up at Hawkesbury on February 14 after a 407-day spell. He got a midfield sit with cover and fitness took it’s toll late in the piece as he peaked on the run on a very wet surface; however, he proved classy enough to find himself in second position a half-length off the winner. He’s drawn an awkward barrier on Sunday but should only improve with the run moving into this 1100m contest. We’ve got Brad Rawiller engaged to ride this son of Winning Rupert and will only need the breaks to come turning for home to be finishing off best. Best Bet Race 3 – #3 Hedge Fund (11) 4yo Gelding | T: Kerry Parker | J: Brad Rawiller (59kg) $2.50 with Neds Next Best Bet at Moruya: Manzoni Manzoni was formerly trained by James Cummings in the Godolphin blue but is now first-up for the Natalie Jarvis team and can be breaking his maiden status on Sunday. He went to the paddock unlucky not have broken his maiden at Hawkesbury on September 8 when missing the start and proceeded to power through the line beaten 2.6-lengths behind Sir Ming. His form prior to that reads well with small margins behind city-grade types – Shalailed and Master Showman – as an example of the quality he’s run into. Now after a 178-day spell and a nice tick-over trial for the new team, we think Manzoni can find the line best for a change in a field that exposed form doesn’t seem to match. It’ll take some beating as Jess Taylor sticks after trialling on this son of Street Boss and from barrier three should get every chance stalking the speed to score.
