Racing will go out to Western Victoria on Tuesday afternoon as the Ballarat Turf Club hosts a very competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with very little rain forecast on Monday and Tuesday, we should be racing on a perfect surface. The rail will go out to the +7m position for the entire circuit, with racing to kick off at 2pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Ballarat: Himeros

The Michael Huglin-trained Himeros will be taking on the 3YO Maiden Plate over 1600m, coming off a nice second-place finish at Pakenham on February 16. This three-year-old colt has only had the two race starts in his short career, with his debut run over 1412m at Geelong and his most recent start showing that with more race experience he will only improve. This son of Savabeel was left a bit flat-footed on the home turn at Pakenham last time out; however, he did grind his way to the line under the urgings of Damian Lane to only go down by just over a length. Lane sticks and only goes to Ballarat for three rides on Tuesday, and this runner looks to be the best of his chances, so we will be backing them in to get the job done.

Next Best Bet at Pakenham: Hayai Mesu

In the very next race, the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Hayai Mesu is coming off a second-place finish at Bendigo over 1400m on February 12 when first-up this preparation. This daughter of Maurice has only raced at the 1600m once before Tuesday, which was her last start of her first racing preparation at Swan Hill where she flashed home to run second on a Heavy track. This filly’s first-up run this time in suggests she is ready to make the step up to 1600m, as she was very strong through the line and took significant ground off the winner in the last 100m. With this race featuring a few runners at their second race start and a few that have struggled to finish in the placings to start their career, it looks a very winnable race for this girl. Jamie Mott will have his first ride on Hayai Mesu on Tuesday, and if he can negate the wide barrier (11) by settling towards the back of the field, we should see her flying down the outside in the final 300m to stake her claim.

Next Best Bet

Race 4 – Silks#10 Hayai Mesu (11)

3yo Filly | T: Ben & JD Hayes | J: Jamie Mott (57.5kg)

Best Value at Pakenham: Sportsbeat

The second race of the day will see the Michael Shepherdson-trained Sportsbeat have his fifth race start and third run for his second career preparation, after racing in two very hot heats of the Future Stars series at Pakenham. This son of Spieth was very good in his first preparation, finishing third on debut before running fourth in a very strong maiden at Warrnambool. Now that this three-year-old gelding strikes a weaker race and steps up to 1400m, everything looks to set up perfectly for him. Dean Holland will jump back aboard after riding him at Warrnambool in his second race start, and from a nice barrier (5), we should see Holland settle this guy midfield off the fence and get him moving around the 600m mark. If he gets even luck and finds the outside in the home straight, Sportsbeat will play a big role in the finish.

Best Value

Race 2 – Silks#8 Sportsbeat (5)

3yo Gelding | T: Michael Shepherdson | J: Dean Holland (59kg)
