Queensland’s Saturday metropolitan racing will be held at Eagle Farm once again, with the Brisbane Racing Club hosting a very competitive nine-race card that kicks off just after midday. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but rain is forecast for Friday and especially Saturday, which could cause the track to chop up and become quite soft by the end of the day. The rail will go out to the +6m position for the entire circuit, and if there is a lot of rain, runners who look to find the outside and the middle of the track will most likely find the better ground in the back half of the program.

Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Santero

After two runner-up finishes in a row, the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted-trained Santero will be looking to break through for a well-deserved win in her fifth start of the season. This five-year-old mare made plenty of ground to finish second in her most recent start, but she couldn’t catch the runaway leader. This daughter of Hallowed Crown has now had one run at 1615m under her belt and will be at peak fitness for this start. If the rain does come, she will enjoy getting her toe into the ground, as she holds a record of one win and six placings on Soft or Heavy turf. This mare will get the services of Jaden Lloyd, and with the aid of his 1.5kg claim, she will only carry 52.5kg from barrier two. As long as this girl jumps with them, Lloyd can settle her just behind the likely leaders – Sagacious and Fast Talking – and look to peel off their back on the home turn and put them to the sword in the final 200m.

Next Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Fastconi

The first leg of the quaddie will see the Chris Waller-trained Fastconi take on the Class 6 Plate over 1200m, coming off a six-week freshen where he was given a nice tick-over trial at the Gold Coast over 1050m on February 28. This five-year-old gelding has won his last two race starts over 1200m at Doomben and the Sunshine Coast in Benchmark 75 and Benchmark 80 grade, respectively, by a combined 3.5 lengths. This son of Nicconi has relished the change of scenery since making the switch from Sydney to Brisbane, recording back-to-back wins in fine style. Saturday will be this gelding’s first start at Eagle Farm, but with a longer straight and a bigger track, we expect it to suit him down to the ground as he likes to settle midfield and run on late in his races. James Orman has taken the reins for both of this guy’s wins in Queensland and will jump back aboard on Saturday, so if he can find a nice position in the middle of the field off the rails, he will be very hard to beat once again.

Best Value Bet at Eagle Farm: Lord Markel

We will be looking to blast out in the final race of the day, the No Metro Wins Handicap over 1400m, where we are siding with Lord Markel from the Adam Campton yard. This six-year-old gelding raced first-up at Randwick over 1200m in a Benchmark 78 Handicap, finishing seventh of nine, before returning to Queensland to race over the same distance in a No Metro Wins Handicap, finishing fifth of 13. This son of Hallowed Crown appears to be ready to run a big race now that he is third-up, while he owns a very nice record at 1400m with four wins and two placings in his 13 starts. If we get a lot of rain and the track gets into the Heavy range, this guy’s chances will only improve. After riding him last time, James Orman will steer him again, and if he can settle outside the leader and find the middle of the track in the home straight, he should figure in the finish at double-digit odds with online bookmakers.
