Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 11, 2023 Journalists Share Posted March 11, 2023 What Canberra Races Where Thoroughbred Park – 1 Randwick Rd, Lyneham ACT 2602 When Monday, March 13, 2023 First Race 1:26pm AEDT Visit Ladbrokes We kick off the racing week with the Canberra Cup Day in the nation’s capital as a field of 13 is set to line up (before scratching’s). The eight-race program also hosts the $150,000 Canberra Guineas at Listed level for the three-year-olds. The rail is out +5m between the 1000m-380m, then +3m the remainder of the circuit. This comes after the running of the Black Opal Stakes on the Sunday prior. There are some scattered showers around the Canberra course for Monday morning and we could be racing on a track listed in the Soft range. The first race is set to get underway from 1:26pm AEDT. Canberra Cup Top Tip: Arapaho The 2000m Canberra Cup sees a nice field assembled but we think the Bjorn Baker-trained, Arapaho, is the one to beat in this year’s edition of the race. He’s third-up and ready to peak after two very credible performances behind the star colt Anamoe in both the Apollo Stakes and Chipping Norton Stakes. He was beaten 2.6 and 4.5 lengths respectively, but that was over and unsuitable trip for this son of Lope De Vega. He’s a proven galloper over the staying trips and the 2000m comes at the perfect time for this six-year-old gelding to step out at his best. Rachael King takes the reins from barrier four and we expect her to be forward of mid-field to make this a true staying test. The race doesn’t stop there, with Explosive Jack and Sacramento warranting respect, but Arapaho looks to be coming from the right form and he’s the bet. Canberra Cup Race 7 – #1 Arapaho (4) 6yo Gelding | T: Bjorn Baker | J: Rachel King (59kg) $4.80 with Neds Canberra Guineas Best Bet: Wolverine We found it too hard to go past Wolverine in the three-year-old feature on Monday afternoon. She brings the clear best form-lines to the race, particularly her second-up performance in the Group 1 Surround Stakes at Randwick on February 25. She was running through the line with vigour and now looks placed with intent form the Kris Lees stable over the 1400m. This race is much easier than another this filly by Tivaci has run into since arriving in Australia and despite her wet track form being suspect, her class in this field should shine through. Barrier twelve will be tricky to navigate for Dylan Gibbons, but so long as she field cover throughout the journey, it’s simply too hard to be against her in this field.
