Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 16, 2023 Journalists Share Posted March 16, 2023 What Goulburn Races Where Goulburn & District Racing Club – Racecourse Dr, Goulburn NSW 2580 When Friday, March 17, 2023 First Race 12:45pm AEDT Visit Ladbrokes This Friday, the Goulburn & District Racing Club will host a very competitive eight-race program headlined by the $150,000 Country Championships Wild Card, where the winner and runner-up will earn a spot in the final at Randwick on April 1. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with warm weather and no rain forecast for Thursday and Friday, we should be racing on a Good surface. The rail will go back into the true position for the entire circuit, while racing kicks off at 12:45pm AEDT. Country Championships Wild Card Tip: Toretto The penultimate Country Championships qualifier will be run and won on Friday afternoon at Goulburn, with the winner and runner-up qualifying for the final on April 1 to be held at Randwick on the first day of The Championships. After returning from an eight-week spell with a fast-finishing third at Moruya in the Country Championships Qualifier, the Matthew Dale-trained Toretto looks to be the horse to beat, now that he is second-up. This son of Press Statement has a very nice second-up record, with one win and two placings from four starts, as well as two wins from two starts at Goulburn. On Friday, this five-year-old gelding has drawn barrier 14, but considering he will drop out the back and settle near the rear of the field, the barrier shouldn’t worry him. Robbie Dolan will stick with this guy after riding him last start, and if Dolan can keep Toretto out of trouble and find the outside of the field as they round the home turn, he will be thundering home late to stake his claim in the concluding stages. Country Championships Wild Card Race 7 – #3 Toretto (14) 5yo Gelding | T: Matthew Dale | J: Robbie Dolan (59kg) $12 with Bet365 Best Bet at Goulburn: Raise Hell Our best bet of the day will be the Danny Williams-trained Raise Hell who returned from a three-month spell last start with a very nice win at this same track and distance, bringing up his second win from his first five starts. This three-year-old gelding settled at the rear of the field before looping them on the home turn to run over the top of the leaders and ran away with a strong victory over Ronny Rock Art. After that first-up win, this son of Hellbent has risen in the weights considerably to 61kg, but considering that six of the eight runners in the race will carry 60kg or more, there shouldn’t be too much of a worry about the weight he has to carry. Winona Costin has ridden this gelding at three of his five starts during his career, recording two wins and a third, so with her sticking taking the ride again on Friday, it fills us with more confidence. From barrier one, Raise Hell should get the run of the race, settle in the box seat and if he gets even luck, he will be hard to hold out in the final 200m.
