All-Star Mile Day 2023 is finally upon us and a massive 10-race program has been assembled at Moonee Valley for punters to delve into on Saturday afternoon. With a hot mid-March day forecast for Melbourne, we expect a hard and fast track on the weekend with a top of 34C forecast for Moonee Valley on its marquee day of the Autumn Carnival. A massive day of racing gets underway at 12:25pm AEDT, with the rail sticking to the true position the entire circuit.

Race 1: VOBIS Gold Comet (1000m)

We do not need to wait too long for our best bet on Saturday, as the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Midwest looks to bring up a long overdue victory. The four-year-old gelding from the Anthony & Sam Freedman barn has finished second at his past three starts in arguably tougher company than what he faces on Saturday and we anticipate Daniel Moor will get the best of him in the opener. In the small seven-horse field, look for Moor to take luck out of the equation and have this bloke scorching the track out in front, giving his rivals something to run down over the 1000m scamper. He has been beaten by the smart Mariamia and Andermatt at his past two starts by small margins, that form stands out to us in this and at yours for theirs odds, Midwest looks a clear best bet of the day at The Valley.

Race 2: BM70 Handicap (1200m)

Our Goddess was a gritty winner at the Pakenham 1200m last time out and we anticipate the Clint McDonald-trained mare will bring up a third win from four starts this campaign. The Shalaa mare managed to kick back on the fence after being clearly headed on that night, to win going away from her rivals in weaker company then what she faces. She strikes us a great play on Saturday, purely because Ben Melham will have her pinging out of the gates and settling up on speed from barrier 11. She is rock hard fit and we expect Moonee Valley to suit her perfectly this time around. She bundled the start when she was last at this track two starts back, so rule a line through that run. If Our Goddess brings her best, then she is going to take some gunning down over 1200m.

Race 3: The Mystic Journey (2040m)

Summerbeel was a smart winner at this track and trip in similar company on February 24 and we expect she will repeat that effort come Saturday. She retains the services of the in-form Blake Shinn for this assignment and from barrier eight will be up on speed throughout the 2040m journey. The Savabeel mare should gain an uncontested lead throughout and with just 55kg on her back, has every advantage alongside her name to bring up a third straight win. Look for Shinn to make his move 600m out from home and have his rivals chasing a long way out and have Summerbeel’s fitness reign supreme.

Race 4: VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m)

Bel Air has been nothing short of impressive this campaign and looks well placed to bring up a second career wins at start nine. The three-year-old gelding finished under a length off Marble Arch in the Future Stars Final at Pakenham on March 2 and arguably brings the best form into this race. Two starts back he was defeated by under three lengths in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington when chasing home the smart Elliptical. From barrier four, look for Ben Melham to have this bloke settled midfield with cover and when asked for an effort, there is no reason why Bel Air cannot finish the better and salute.

Race 5: The Mugatoo (1600m)

One we are willing to side with at a price is the Michelle Payne-trained Rambler Rebel who is a genuine Moonee Valley front-running specialist. The seven-year-old gelding has two wins at the track this campaign on the back of a couple of well-rated steers from Ethan Brown when beating home the likes of Riverplate and Worsfold. One of the best front-running jockeys Linda Meech takes the steer on Saturday and in a race where we anticipate Rambler Rebel will gain an uncontested lead, Rambler Rebel should ultimately prove too hard to run down in another dominant front-running display.

Race 6: Listed Abell Stakes (1200m)

In The Boat is a Group 1 sprinter in the waiting and following a lengthy spell, we anticipate the Lindsey Smith-trained galloper can return from a spell with a win. He holds a formidable record on Good surfaces, having won six times and placed on three other occasions from nine starts. The five-year-old sprint has two wins from as many starts at the track and trip and despite drawing barrier seven, Blaike McDougall will have this guy bounding along out in front. Despite struggling in the spring on rain-affected ground, In The Boat should be kicking his autumn campaign off on a high.

Race 7: All-Star Mile (1600m)

The fifth edition of the All-Star Mile looks to be a cracking event between three of the best weight-for-age horses in Australia. There is without a doubt Alligator Blood ($2.80), I’m Thunderstruck ($6.50) and Mr Brightside ($6.50) are the trio to beat in this year’s race, despite the remaining 12 rivals bringing genuine form lines into the event. Can one of the top three in the market solidify themselves as a Cox Plate contender in the spring? Or will we see an upset from a lesser-known runner in the $5 million event at The Valley.

Race 8: Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m)

The Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes has attracted a capacity field of 14 three-year-old fillies, but we expect Paris Dior to come out on top on Saturday. The Pierro filly chased home the rising star Benedetta in the Inglis Sprint last time out and despite going down by three lengths to that runner, she did manage to put close to two lengths on her closest rival back in third. She looks to be a filly who will appreciate getting back around the bend second-up from a spell and if Jamie Mott can have her lobbed midfield with cover from barrier seven, Paris Dior arguably has the best form lines in her career heading into the Typhoon Tracy and we expect the filly will break a winless drought that stretches almost 12 months.

Race 9: Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m)

With only a couple of these proven at the 2040m in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes, it is simply too hard to go past Dunkel in the penultimate race of the day. The three-year-old son of Dundeel certainly leaves things to the last possible moment in his race, but the bloke simply has a will to win that not many can match at the moment. In his last two starts in Tasmania, he has powered home over the final 100m to claim victory on the line and we anticipate a similar result on the weekend. Harry Coffey will have this bloke at the rear of the field from barrier 12, but if he can gain a cart into the race 600m out from home, Dunkel certainly has the runs on the board and winning confidence behind him to be saluting in the Alister Clark Stakes.

Race 10: Country Mile Series Final (1600m)

Good luck if you land the winner in the final race of the day on Saturday. We have sided with the Matt Cumani-trained Khoekhoe in what is one of the toughest ways to end a card you will see. With three runners being $6.50 joint-favourites, it is clear an even contest, but if Khoekhoe can replicate his last start Ballarat effort, he’ll prove too good for this lot. He has always been a horse with a stack of ability and finally put it all together a fortnight ago when thrashing a similar field. He needs to lug 60kg, but from barrier one, if Celine Gaudray can have him bounding along out in front, he might just prove too hard to run down. Genuine field job for the quaddie however.
