It is Yarra Valley Cup Day on Sunday afternoon with an eight-race card set down for judgement in Yarra Glen. With a bit of luck, HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert can steer you towards a couple of winners to help round out your weekend on a winning note. With warm weather forecast, we expect to be racing on a firmer surface than the current Soft 6, while the rail sticks to the true position throughout. Racing commences at 1:20pm AEDT.

Yarra Valley Cup Top Tip: Port Philip

The Yarra Valley Cup over 1950m is the feature event on Sunday and despite no doubt wanting further than the 1950m, Port Philip from the Julius Sandhu barn looks hard to go past. The five-year-old gelding had a pipe-opener at Flemington upon return, but second-up from a spell looks poised to strike on Sunday. He brings genuine Group 1 form lines to this event, considering three starts back he took High Emocean to within a neck in the Bendigo Cup, with that runner going on to finish third in last year’s Melbourne Cup. Look for Beau Mertens to have him settled in the one-one throughout the Cup and when asked for an effort, we’re hoping Port Philip’s class will shine through in the Yarra Valley Cup.

Best Bet at Yarra Valley: Skinny Dip

The Rhonda Mangan-trained Skinny Dip steps back from racing at Moonee Valley and brings clearly the best from to this BM64 and is an obvious best bet of the day. The four-year-old son of Sacred Falls was a smart winner at The Valley two starts back before chasing home the likes of Tick Tock Lady and Heavenly Eagle at his most recent start. He steps back to the 1500m the same trip he won at two starts back and considering he should gain a gun run in transit from barrier six, he is sure to take some holding out. Jamie Mott will look to have him saved for one last crack at his rivals and with a strong finishing burst, Skinny Dip should prove too good for this lot.

Next Best at Yarra Valley: Hard Questions

Andrew Bobbin’s Hard Questions has returned in fine style this campaign having won both of his starts since return from a spell and he looks a great play in the second leg of the quaddie. The four-year-old gelding gave his rivals somewhat of a smacking at Bendigo on February 28 and as he steps up to the 1950m, he looks like he will only get better as he steps out in trip. He needs to carry 2kg more than what he did last time out, but considering he should gain a similar run, midfield with cover, he looks a class above some of these and we are getting a nice price from online bookmakers to find out.
