Midweek racing in New Zealand is held at Pukekohe on Wednesday in what is a fairly tame day of racing. The track is currently in the Soft range with some rain likely forecast for Tuesday, so the chances of a better surface seem unlikely. Racing is set to get underway at 12:51pm NZDT.

Best Bet at Pukekohe – Tearsforfears

The locally trained first-starter Tearsforfears looks to be a very promising type and comes out on top in a typically large maiden field for this time of year. He is a three-year-old that has won all three of his trials, one in each month of this year. He has improved at each outing and won his most recent by two lengths on a soft track at Avondale over 1000m. The only surprise is that he has not already been on sold to Asia. Opie Bosson steps into the irons for the first time and Tearsforfears will be ready to rumble on his debut.

Next Best at Pukekohe – Lady Hika

The maiden highweight is where we find the next best bet of the day in Lady Hika. She has looked likely in a couple of her nine career starts, which is more than you can say about some of the others. Her most recent placing came three starts back on this track when she finished a brave runner-up after trying to lead all the way. She had an excuse at her next run and then found the ground a bit too quick for her in a decent maiden here as well. She should hold her place on the rail from the pole position, and if not leading, she will receive the run of the race. She will get few better chances than this to break her maiden status.

Next Best

Race 2 – Silks #10 Lady Hika (1)

3yo Filly | T: Andrew Forsman | J: Lemmy Douglas (66.5kg)

Best Value at Pukekohe – Rabada

There should be some each-way value about Rabada after only an average effort at Rotorua last time out. Not much went right for her that day off a tricky draw and on a track that can play havoc with horses having their first start there. Her efforts prior make for better reading and she gets a lovely swing in the draws on Wednesday. Her record over the trip leaves a lot to be desired, but in most of those runs she has had a genuine excuse, so the duck eggs should be ignored. A more senior jockey in Cameron Lammas takes the reins, which should also help, and hopefully a good price from online bookmakers can be found come raceday.

Best Value

Race 8 – Silks #6 Rabada (4)

5yo Gelding | T: Graham Richardson & Rogan Norvall | J: Cameron Lammas (59kg)
