What Hawkesbury Races
Where Hawkesbury Race Club – 1 Racecourse Rd, Clarendon NSW 2756
When Thursday, March 23, 2023
First Race 1:15pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

We’ll be racing at Hawkesbury on Thursday afternoon with a competitive eight-race program lined up. The rail is set to be placed in the true position the entire circuit and the surface is currently listed as a Soft 5, which is what we expect to be racing on with some minor showers forecast. The first race is set to get underway at 1:15pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Californian

Californian is dual-accepted for Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday and the opener at Hawkesbury on Thursday. If he choses the latter, we’re happy to make him the best bet of the afternoon. He’s on debut and this two-year-old colt has been trialling the house down leading into this first-up assignment. His latest came on March 13 at Rosehill over 900m, where he powered home between runners to find second. It was an eye-catching jumpout and this looks a much easier race than the Randwick-Kensington alternative, where there are chances all over the page. Tim Clark is booked to ride at the Thursday meeting and from barrier one should see a soft run in transit. He’s looks a progressive type, and if he elects to come here, we’re keen to back him.

Next Best: Barmera

It’s taken a while to see the best of Barmera, but after breaking his maiden in dominant fashion last start at Hawkesbury on March 14, we think he can make it back-to-back wins. He went on to win by a stunning 6.3-length margin, and although his rivals may not have been of the highest quality, you still need to respect the win to the eye. He cleared out on the small field and finds a very similar setup on Thursday afternoon. This time he goes to BM64 level and this is clearly a much more tricky task for the four-year-old; however, from barrier six, jockey Tom Sherry should be looking to keep this gelding out of trouble turning for home, similarly to last start. If he can replicate his latest run, now at the 1600m, Barmera looks hard to beat again.

Next Best Again: Marelle

Marelle will be engaged for her sixth career start for trainer Chris Waller, and we think it’s about time she broke her maiden status. This looks her best opportunity to do so, stepping up to the 1500m after three straight efforts over the 1400m. The extra 1000m with an ideal gate should do this daughter of Savabeel a world of good, as she’s tended to get way too far out of her ground. That’s exactly what happened at Randwick-Kensington on March 8 in the small field, beaten 2.2 lengths by her stablemate Built. She closed off nicely for fourth in what should be a solid form race moving forward. She’s been placed beautifully here by the Waller yard, and with a better jump from the stalls to go along with some luck, Marelle can find the winner’s enclosure for the first time.
