Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 31, 2023 Journalists Share Posted March 31, 2023 What Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes Day 2023 Where Manawatu Racing Club – 67 Racecourse Road, Awapuni, Palmerston North When Saturday, April 1, 2023 First Race 12:30pm NZDT Visit Ladbrokes The 2023 edition of the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes is the headline act for the nine-race program out of Awapuni on Saturday afternoon. The track is rated a Soft 6, with the rail out 1m (outside bend), for the meeting getting underway at 12:30pm NZDT. Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes Top Tip – Trobriand Trobriand looks the runner to beat following a last start second to his star stablemate Tokyo Tycoon in the Group 3 Matamata Slipper, he was well beaten but at the line he was well clear of the rest of the field. He showed he is fighting fit with a recent three length trial win and from a handy draw Opie Bosson should be able to slot this Mark Walker trained runner into a nice position. The stable has won the last three runnings of the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes and should be adding to that record here. Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes Race 7 – #1 Trobriand (3) 2yo Colt | T: Mark Walker | J: Opie Bosson (57kg) $2.20 with Ladbrokes Best Bet at Awapuni – Pinerello Pinarello didn’t have a lot of luck in the running last start when resuming from a spell, he was well back in the field on the turn and had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight, but once he found clear air he came home strongly to finish a bold seventh over 1400m. He will appreciate the extra 600m in distance having won the Queensland Derby last year. He has been working well since that last start effort and should be finishing over the top of his rivals close to home. Best Bet Race 8 – #4 Pinarello (11) 4yo Gelding | T: Roger James & Robert Wellwood | J: Warren Kennedy (56.5kg) $4 with Bet365 Best Value at Awapuni – Brian Lamont Brian Lamont had no luck getting a clear run in the straight last start when finishing sixth and he had plenty left in the tank. If Warren Kennedy can get a better run over the final 200m of the race he should be going close to taking this race out at good odds. He handles all types of track conditions and deserves a winning turn after some solid recent efforts. This Wayne Hillis-trained gelding should cap off a good day for Warren Kennedy.
