Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted April 4, 2023 Journalists Share Posted April 4, 2023 What Wanganui Races Where Wanganui Racecourse – 19 Purnell St, Wanganui, New Zealand When Thursday, April 6, 2023 First Race 12:37pm NZST Visit Ladbrokes The New Zealand thoroughbred meeting on Thursday, April 6, is being held at Wanganui, where there are eight races carded. The track conditions at time of writing are Heavy, and even though the weather is forecast to remain fine, the track will probably not improve by much as early morning dews will retain the moisture in the ground. The first kicks off at 12:37pm NZST. Best Bet: Heir Apparent We are hoping to kick off the late quaddie in style with Heir Apparent. He made a satisfactory debut on his home track at New Plymouth, and then with over a month between runs he improved sharply to finish a close-up second, beaten the barest of margins. On both occasions he came with a sustained burst, and he should relish the step up in distance for this third-up assignment. The Alan Sharrock stable is flying at present, and this fellow by the all-conquering stallion Prosir is set to take the next logical step here. Best Bet Race 5 – #6 Heir Apparent (5) 3yo Colt | T: A Sharrock | J: J Riddell (58kg) Bet with Ladbrokes Next Best Bet: Don’t Ask The lightly tried Don’t Ask looks a solid play in what is one of the tighter races on the card. He is taking on some seasoned campaigners fresh up without the benefit of having had a recent trial, but showed plenty of ability during his first prep. He won his first two starts on end before finishing fifth in his next start behind none other than Mustang Valley, who would go on to be a Group 1 winner three starts later. This fellow was actually favoured to beat Mustang Valley and should have finished a lot closer after being hampered early on. He is resuming from a spell that would have done him the world of good, and after the 4kg claim he will give his opposition plenty to think about. Next Best Race 6 – #5 Don’t Ask (9) 4yo Gelding | T: JL Rathbone | J: HM Neill (a4) (56.5kg) Bet with Betfair Best Value Bet: Take On The last is where we find Take On, and hopefully he will be the icing on the cake of a good day’s punting. He is stepping back to a mile after finishing 10th over a middle distance at Trentham most recently, and not a lot went right for him that day from a wide draw in a stop-start affair. He is better off at the mile on a genuine tempo at this stage, and by this point in the day everyone will be scouting wide for the better going, so the wide draw will actually work in his favour. Master trainer Kevin Myers has a few in the race, so it is encouraging to see his stable apprentice Lily Sutherland sticking with this guy. If Sutherland can get him to an even rhythm at the half mile, then Take On should keep on trucking into the race and hopefully get up where it matters most. Best Value Race 8 – #10 Take On (13) 4yo Gelding | T: K Myers | J: L Sutherland (a3) (58kg) Bet with Bet365 Thursday quaddie numbers for Wanganui races Wanganui quadrella selections Thursday, April 6, 2023 1-6-7 5-9 1-4-7-11-12 10-11 Investment: $60 for 100% More horse racing tips View the full article
