Good Friday racing heads to Geelong for the first time this year where The Country Discovery worth $500,000 headlines proceedings. With wet weather forecast for the region in the leadup to Good Friday, we expect to be racing on a track in the Soft rating, most likely around a Soft 6, whilst the rail sticks to the true position throughout. Racing from Geelong is set to commence at 12:30pm AEST.

The Country Discovery Top Tip – Veranskova

Worth $500,000, The Country Discovery has attracted a capacity field of 15 sprinters from around Victoria and we’re hoping Veranskova can take home the main slice of the pie. Cindy Alderson’s five-year-old mare got up right on the winning post when resuming at Flemington on March 25 and in doing so got the better of Seradess who she meets again, albeit worst at the weights. Runners like Seradess, stablemate Jigsaw, The Inferno and In The Boat have bigger fish to fry in Adelaide, but Veranskova looks to have been set for a race like this. She draws to gain a sit on what looks to be a hot speed throughout the 1100m sprint trip and having won over 1300m in her career, we know she can soak up that pressure and potentially finish the best. She is proven on wet ground, and with 54kg on her back, it is no surprise that her price has already come in sharply with online bookmakers.

Best Bet at Geelong – The Javelin

Our best bet on Good Friday comes up in the opening event when The Javelin looks to build on his recent form at Yarra Valley. The Dean Binaisse-trained five-year-old has won three of his last four over the 1000m there and the step up to the 1100m looks ideal for this son of Uncencumbered. From barrier six, Remi Tremsal who sticks on board will take this bloke to the front of the field and if there is ever going to be an advantage to be up on speed on Friday, it should be in the opener. As long as he handles the step up in class, there is no reason why The Javelin cannot run his rivals ragged once again.

Next Best at Geelong – Empressive Enuff

We will be hoping the Dean Binaisse and Remi Tremsal combination can strike again in race three when they combine with impressive last start winner Empressive Enuff. The four-year-old gelding took up the running at Bairnsdale on March 26 and booted clear at the top of the straight in a similar field to this to put some five-lengths on his rivals in dominant fashion. He will need to be at his speedy best early on this time round having drawn the car park out in barrier 16. As long as he does not get stuck three wide the trip from the sticky draw, he is another who can run his rivals into the ground and is also proven on wet ground. Empressive Enuff looks a great bet on Friday.

Next Best Again at Geelong – Mixmulti

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Mixmulti looked to be a certainty beat at Moonee Valley on March 24 and with even luck on Friday she should right those wrongs in the Country Oaks. The four-year-old mare is sure to appreciate getting her hoof in the ground at Geelong having placed on two occasions and winning twice from five starts on rain-affected ground. This will be her first crack at 2200m, but having won three starts back at 2000m and placed twice in the city over 2040m, we have no doubt she will handle the trip. Look for Dean Holland to have Mixmulti settled midfield with cover and when asked for an effort, she should be running a nice race in the Oaks.
