Ascot WA betting tips

What Good Friday Family Raceday
Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104
When Saturday, April 7, 2023
First Race 1:48pm AWST

Visit Ladbrokes

This Good Friday, the Western Australian Turf Club will host a very competitive eight-race program from Ascot Racecourse – the first of two consecutive racedays at the track over the Easter weekend. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with no rain expected on Thursday or Friday, we should race on a fair, firm surface for the duration of the program. Following last Saturday’s racing at the +10m position, the rail will be pushed out to the +13m position for Friday’s meeting, favouring on-speed runners over the shorter distance events. The first race on Good Friday Family Raceday will kick off at 1:48pm AWST.

Best Bet at Ascot: Angelic Miss

The $100,000 Majorie Charleson Classic for Fillies and Mares over 1200m will be our best bet, with the Simon Miller-trained Angelic Miss returning from a seven-week freshen. This six-year-old mare won the Listed Scenic Blast Stakes to begin her preparation before finishing fourth in the Listed Cyril Flower Stakes last start, where she settled behind the leaders and even though she didn’t look like she would win, she didn’t get a lot of room in the final 200m. This Savabeel daughter enjoys the Ascot 1200m, where she has five wins and three placings from 11 starts in her 20-start career. On Friday, she will compete in a small field of six runners, and despite having to carry the top weight, this mare appears to be the class horse of the field. Patrick Carbery will ride this mare for the second time after winning her first start this campaign, so if he can give her a similar ride and push the button with 300m, Angelic Miss should be too good.

Next Best at Ascot: Senorita Dorotea

The final race of the day will be a No Metro Win Last Year Handicap race over 1200m, in which the Sean & Jake Casey-trained Senorita Dorotea looks well placed to break through for her first win of the preparation after finishing second in her previous two starts. After racing over 1000m on Saturday, this four-year-old mare will be on a quick six-day back up to race again on Friday, indicating that she has recovered well after losing to Ex Sport Girl by just over a neck on the line. This Sooboog daughter demonstrated last start that she does not need to lead and that she can run on from a midfield position, which should serve her well when she steps up to 1200m again at her next start. Chris Parnham sticks with this mare since riding her last Saturday, and if he can get a one-one position from barrier three, Senorita Dorotea should be too strong and too good in the final stages.

Best Value at Ascot: Military Power

Military Power, trained by Jim Taylor, will attempt to break his maiden in the second race of the day, a No Metro Wins Last Year Handicap over 1100m. This three-year-old gelding has raced twice in his short career, finishing second both times after being run over in the final stages of both starts. The son of Defcon has returned from a three-month layoff and won both of his trials at Belmont over 400m and 1000m, demonstrating that he is back in good shape. Brad Parnham will be legged aboard for his first ride on this horse, and if he can get him to jump well from barrier six, he should be able to find the lead on this quick gelding. Even though Military Power is yet to win a race, this race on Friday does not appear to be overly strong, and if he gets to lead and runs the race to suit, he could prove too difficult to catch in the final 200m.

Best Value

Race 2 – silks#5 Military Power (6)

3yo Gelding | T: Jim Taylor | J: Brad Parnham (57kg)
