Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted April 6, 2023 Journalists Share Posted April 6, 2023 What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, April 8, 2023 First Race 11:48am AEST Visit Ladbrokes The Brisbane Racing Club will host a very competitive nine-race program out of Doomben Racecourse this Saturday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, and with a lot of rain forecast to fall in Brisbane on Friday, we expect to be still be in the Soft range by the time racing gets underway. The rail will be pushed out to the +5.5m position for the entire circuit, with the first race jumping at 11:48am AEST. Best Bet at Doomben: Chinny Boom The Clinton Taylor-trained Chinny Boom returned from a five-month spell with a massive 8.75-length trial victory over 900m at Rockhampton on March 20. Last preparation, this three-year-old filly was defeated for the first time in her career by Stroll in the Listed Mode Stakes over 1200m at this track on December 3 before going out for a spell. This daughter of Spirit Of Boom was dominant in her first five victories, winning by an average margin of 4.35 lengths, before losing by the smallest of margins in the Mode Stakes, where the gap between first and third was less than half a length. Sunshine In Paris, the third horse in that race, has won the Group 1 Surround Stakes and finished second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes since returning from a spell, demonstrating that this filly’s form is very strong heading into her third racing campaign. Ben Thompson rode Chinny Boom at Eagle Farm and Doomben at the end of last preparation, so he knows her very well and we expect him to give her every possible chance to record her sixth victory at her seventh start. Best Bet Race 6 – #2 Chinny Boom (1) 3yo Filly | T: Clinton Taylor | J: Ben Thompson (57kg) $2.20 with Bet365 Next Best at Doomben: Pharoah’s Reign The Richard & Will Freedman-trained Pharoah’s Reign was thrown into the deep end two starts ago to contest the Group 2 Matron Stakes at Flemington, before dropping back in class to win a Benchmark 68 Handicap at Hawkesbury last start. This four-year-old mare has won two of her three starts this preparation, with her only defeat coming in the Matron Stakes. This daughter of American Pharoah has only run over 2000m once in her career, and she won by less than a length at Gosford on August 26. Lining up in this Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2040m following a strong run at 1800m last start, she looks very well placed to maintain her unbeaten run over 2000m. Ben Thompson will ride this mare for the first time on Saturday, and he will look to push forward and cross the field to take the lead from barrier 10. Pharoah’s Reign will be in this race for a long time if she can get to the lead or settle outside the leader without doing too much work early on. Next Best Race 3 – #3 Pharoah’s Reign (10) 4yo Mare | T: Richard & Will Freedman | J: Ben Thompson (57kg) $4.80 with Neds Best Value at Doomben: Moktaffy The Chris Waller-trained Moktaffy comes here second-up after a very nice fresh run behind Valley Of Dreams and Charge On at this track over 1350m on March 22. This five-year-old gelding has a solid second-up record (4:1-1-1), with both of his victories coming over the 1600m, which is the distance he’ll be stepping up to on Saturday. Although this son of Lope De Vega has only won two races and placed in six more in his 22 career starts, his first-up performance suggests that he has returned bigger and better this time after a four-month layoff. Damien Thornton has decided to stick with him, and if he can find a similar position on the outside of runners in midfield, as he did last time, he should be powering home late to stake his claim in the final 200m.
