Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted April 7, 2023 Journalists Share Posted April 7, 2023 What Stawell Cup Day 2023 Where Stawell Racecourse- Black Range Rd, Stawell, VIC, 3380 When Sunday, April 9, 2023 First Race 12:55pm AEST Visit Ladbrokes We head out to Stawell on Sunday afternoon for Stawell Cup Day where a nine-race card is scheduled. With perfect conditions forecast for the track on Sunday, with a bit of luck we will be racing on a firmer surface following significant rain forecast in the lead up to the meeting. However, the track is currently a Heavy 9 and we doubt we will see much better than a Heavy 8 or Soft 7. The day of racing is set to commence at 12:55pm AEST, whilst the rail sticks to the true position throughout. Stawell Cup Top Tip: Deepstrike Second-up from a spell, the Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr)-trained Deepstrike looks poised to strike in the Stawell Cup. The five-year-old gelding is already a winner on Heavy ground and has another win and two minor placings on rain-affected ground. The son of Tavistock has a win to his name second-up in the past and considering he has three wins from five goes at the 1800m, we have no doubt he will relish the 1850m he gets on Sunday. There looks to be enough speed in the race for this bloke to settle at the rear of the field and charge home under urgings of Dean Yendall and salute in Sunday’s feature. Easter Cup Race 8 – #3 Deepstrike (11) 5yo Gelding | T: Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | J: Dean Yendall (55.5kg) $10 with Palmerbet Best Bet at Stawell: Stretto Our best bet of the day comes up in the second leg of the quaddie when the Simon Morrish-trained Stretto looks to bring up a third career win at start 22. The six-year-old son of Nicconi is third-up after 10-months on the sidelines and strikes ground he is sure to relish. The gelding has seven minor placings to his name on wet ground and we have little doubt that he will bring up that first win on Sunday. He draws to gain a beautiful run in transit from barrier one and as long as Daniel Stackhouse has him in clear air on the home turn, we anticipate Stretto will prove too hard to hold out and is a clear best bet of the day at Stawell. Best Bet Race 7 – #2 Stretto (1) 6yo Gelding | T: Simon Morrish | J: Daniel Stackhouse (60.5kg) $2.90 with Bet365 Next Best at Stawell: Valenconi The Jason Warren-trained Valenconi has certainly had his chance being a 15-start maiden, but he looks perfectly placed to bring up his first win on Sunday. The three-year-old son of Nicconi was unlucky not to finish closer than what he did at Sandown on March 1 when beaten under two-lengths to Zoupurring. That horse has since gone on to be competitive at Flemington franking the form. If Daniel Stackhouse can have this bloke settled midfield with cover early on, he has shown that he can handle wet ground and is more than capable. If Valenconi can be saved for one last crack at them, it should be 16th time the charm. Next Best Race 2 – #8 Valenconi (9) 3yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Beau Mertens (58kg) $5.50 with Ladbrokes Best Value at Stawell: Pravro Pravro from the Gwenda Johnstone barn is a genuine mudder and based off his second-up win at Echuca on a Heavy 8, we expect he will continue that winning form on Sunday. The 10-year-old gelding has three wins from five starts to his name on Heavy going and with the 3kg claim of Rose Hammond on Sunday, he looks perfectly placed to build on that record. The slight query is that he has just one win from 14 starts at 1100m, but considering he has won twice at 1200m, we know he will handle the occasion and with a bit of luck can salute at a seemingly ridiculous price with online bookmakers. Best Value Race 4 – #3 Pravro (6) 10yo Gelding | T: Gwenda Johnstone | J: Rose Hammond (a3) (60kg) $14 with Neds Sunday quaddie tips for Stawell races Stawell quadrella selections Sunday, April 9, 2023 Field 2-4 3-4-8-9 1-2-3-6 Investment: $384 for 100% More horse racing tips View the full article
