This Wednesday afternoon, the Brisbane Racing Club will host a highly competitive nine-race card. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with no rain expected on Tuesday or Wednesday, we anticipate racing on a Good surface for the duration of the program. The rail will be pushed out to the +10.5m after racing in the +5.5m on Saturday, so we expect the track to favour leaders and on-speed runners all day.

The first race at Doomben will jump at 11:57am AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben: Alamira

Our best bet of the day will the Annabel Neasham-trained Alamira who is coming off a very nice win when first-up for her second racing preparation, winning at this track over 1100m in a Class 2 Fillies & Mares Handicap on March 17. This three-year-old filly is starting to build a nice record in her seven-race career, missing the placings only twice, once on debut and once in her final start in her first racing preparation. This daughter of Pride Of Dubai has very good form references from her last first racing campaign, when she ran in the Listed Mode Stakes in December of last year before a three-month layoff. When fresh, this filly was very good, sitting in behind the pace before peeling off the leaders back to kick clear and put a nice margin on the rest of the field before being switched off in the final 50m. Although barrier 16 isn’t what Neasham would have prefered, Ben Thompson will ride this filly for the first time, and he should give her every chance to win back-to-back races this time out.

Next Best at Doomben: Third Time Round

The second leg of the quaddie will be a Benchmark 70 Handicap over 1350m, in which the Tony Gollan-trained Third Time Round will look to build on her strong win last start at Ipswich over this distance on March 23. This four-year-old mare didn’t jump well in her previous race, but she was able to muster and find the front early to take the lead before kicking clear around the home turn. This Tivaci daughter has will go back to Doomben for the fourth time in her career looking for her second win and with her staying at the 1350m and stepping up slightly in grade, she looks very well placed to win again. Ben Thompson has ridden this girl to all three of her victories, so his return gives us even more confidence. Third Time Round will get the run of the race from barrier two and look to take the lead unless another of the speed influences want to push forward from a wide barrier and cross her, which will see her settle behind the speed with some cover. With even luck and clear running in the final 300m, this mare should be able to replicate her last start win and pull away from her rivals in the concluding stages of the race.

Next Best Again at Doomben: Telephone Booth

The Mark Currie-trained Telephone Booth will take her place in the Benchmark 68 Handicap over 1600m at Doomben on Wednesday, coming off four good runs this preparation, but she is yet to break through for a win. The race she will compete in will be the lowest grade of race she has competed in this time, and she appears to have a very good chance in this field. This Top Echelon daughter finished fifth at this track over 1615m on April 1, where she was forced to sit three-wide for the entire race and faded out in the final stages, losing by just over three lengths. Angela Jones will stick with this mare after riding her last start, and with the help of her 1.5kg claim, Jones will push forwards and look to take the lead or sit behind the likely leader in Greek Star, giving her every chance to win.
