After an incredible day of racing at Sha Tin on Champions Day over the weekend, we look forward for another terrific program out of Happy Valley this Wednesday with nine races to sink our teeth into. The rail is in the A position for the meeting and punters should be prepared for a fair surface for racing. The weather looks promising on the radar and the first race is scheduled to kick things off at 6:45pm HKT (8:45pm AEST).

Best Bet: Hoss

Hoss will take a power of beating based on his last two performances at the Happy Valley 1200m. He won two starts back in Class 4 in sensational fashion, winding up down the middle of the track to score a dominant 1.3-length victory. It was very impressive with Hoss subsequently just getting beaten in his first start in Class 3, being headed by Winning Icy on April 6. They both cleared out on their rivals in the process, and although it may have been a result due to the yielding ground, you must think those two were simply at another level. Zac Purton keeps the reins on the Jamie Richards-trained gelding and has been outstanding since hopping aboard this son of Fiorente. We should get a genuinely run race and Hoss should get the perfect run throughout from barrier two. As Purton looks for clean air turning for home, we think Hoss will be too good.

Next Best: One Heart One

It was a horror show if you backed One Heart One last start at Happy Valley on April 6, but we’re more than forgiving of what the beaten favourite produced. He was hampered at a crucial stage at around the 600m turning for home and simply didn’t recover to be in the finish. He was still bold to the line, finishing mid-field four lengths away, and although the margin is significant, we think he can produce much better on Wednesday night. He lost a bit of focus in that race as well and David Hayes sent One Heart One back to the barrier trials for a soft hitout just to keep this four-year-old out of Burgundy ticking over nicely. He draws to find a prominent run throughout the race and, with Karis Teetan taking the reins this time, should hopefully settle much more generously with some cover. One Heart One could find himself on the verge of a class drop if he doesn’t put it all together soon, but we think this is a great opportunity to pick up his first career win.

Next Best Again: Splendid Living

Splendid Living has finally started putting it all together as a late-blooming six-year-old. He found his first Hong Kong win on February 15 with a tough front-running effort, careering away with the prize. He’s since run into the minor money on two occasions and both times kept clinging on when chased home strongly. You know exactly what you’re going to get from this son of Starspangledbanner, meaning you can start backing him with some confidence. We don’t think he’s hit a ratings ceiling just yet, and a win here could see him rise to Class 3 next time. He’s a genuine pacemaker, and provided he can go forward and deal with the pressure, Splendid Living will be a tough horse to chase down.
