The Warrnambool May Racing Carnival comes to an end on Thursday with another 10 races to round out a big three days. With the rail sticking to the true position throughout the carnival on a chopped-out track which most likely will be a Soft 7 or Heavy 8, it will be no disadvantage to be drawn out wide as the day goes on. The Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) and the Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) are the headline acts for the meeting, which kicks off at 11:15am AEST.

Warrnambool Cup Top Tip: Cadre Du Noir

The Listed Warrnambool Cup over 2350m has attracted a strong field of stayers, and with a bit of luck Cadre Du Noir can outstay his rivals. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained runner is stepping back from Group 3 company, where he has been beaten by big margins in his last two starts. Jordan Childs hops on board, and from barrier 19 we hope he will take up the running and make this a genuine staying event. This son of War Front eats up the trip, with three wins and two seconds, and despite this being his first start the ‘Melbourne way’ since 2021, Cadre Du Noir looks a great play in the Warrnambool Cup.

Grand Annual Steeplechase Top Tip: Stern Idol

Is there a better jumper in the country than Stern Idol? He is a deserving odds-on favourite with online bookmakers for the Grand Annual Steeplechase following a 15-length win at Pakenham on April 16. He will be bounding along out in front all by himself, and do not be surprised to see him lead by a big space halfway through the race. He has a win at 3500m and didn’t look like slowing down on that day. He needs to lug 69kg and obviously see out the trip, but from what we have seen so far, Stern Idol should simply be winning this year’s Grand Annual Steeplechase.

Best Bet at Warrnambool: The General

The General returns to Victoria following a less-than-ideal campaign in Queensland in tougher races than this. The six-year-old gelding is a genuine ‘mudder’ and will appreciate the conditions given he has three wins and six minors from 15 runs on rain-affected ground. Nash Rawiller will have this bloke doing his own thing out in front, and considering there isn’t a better front-running jockey in the country, we expect Nash to get us the cash with The General in race six.

Best Bet

Race 6 – Silk #6 The General (9)

6yo Gelding | T: Richard Laming | J: Nash Rawiller (59kg)

Next Best at Warrnambool: Wish I Might

With a bit of luck, we will have a bank to play with in the last race of the carnival and we can cheer home Wish I Might in style. The seven-year-old mare smashed her rivals on Heavy ground at Ararat last time out, settling up on speed and quickening nicely under Ryan Houston. With Houston sticking on board, she will take some beating. Being drawn out wide will be no disadvantage this late on in the carnival, and if Wish I Might replicates what he did at Ararat, he should prove too hard to hold out.

Next Best

Race 10 – Silk #13 Wish I Might (11)

7yo Mare | T: Daniel Bowman | J: Ryan Houston (a3) (59kg)

Best Value at Warrnambool: Brookline

The Archie Alexander-trained Brookline is first-up off a 10-month layoff, and despite the stint between runs, we are happy to side with her on Thursaday. The four-year-old mare has two wins from as many starts on Heavy ground, with a win and a minor placing in two starts on Soft ground. Her sole unplaced effort on rain-affected going came in a much tougher race at Flemington before she headed to the paddock. Declan Bates will look to have her up on speed from barrier three, and if he can stay off the rails, Brookline looks a great way to build a bank early on in the day.

Race 4 – Silk #2 Brookline (3)

4yo Mare | T: Archie Alexander | J: Declan Bates (60kg)
