It’s Wagga Gold Cup Day at Murrumbidgee Turf Club this Friday with eight races set down for decision. The $200,000 Listed feature has provided a massive field of 16 runners engaged to battle it out over 2000m for a free ticket to The Big Dance later in the year. If the track handles the racing from the day prior, it should be playing fair for punters. The rail will stay in the true position throughout the entire circuit and the course should have some sting in the ground as a Soft track is likely to remain. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 12:40pm AEST.

Wagga Gold Cup Selection: Bois D’argent

It’s a wide-open edition of the Wagga Gold Cup and we’re looking for some value in the form of the Annabel Neasham-trained Bois D’argent. He’s a European import having his third start since arriving in Australia and this seems like an early grand final for this son of Toronado. It’s seven weeks since his last run at Moonee Valley on March 18 in a race where he appeared not to handle the tight-turning track. He comes to a much bigger course and with a terrific barrier trial under his belt at Rosehill on April 28. The 2000m looks ideal with his best European form being at the staying trip, and a Soft to Heavy surface will only bring him further into calculations for punters. The major query has to be barrier 21; however, the outside of the track may be the better part late in the day. Look for Alysha Collett to wind up down the middle of the course on Bois D’argent to score at a good price with online bookmakers.

Best Bet at Wagga: Encantado

We’ll be looking to kick things off in the opener at Wagga Wagga as Encantado makes his debut for the Rob Potter stable. He’s only had two jump-outs, and both have caught the eye — the first came back in December 2022 where this son of Written Tycoon did no work throughout, then on April 18 he led to score a one-length win. He seems to have plenty of versatility, and although he’s an unknown quantity in this race, the exposed form on the page doesn’t hold a major threat. He looks like a late-blooming four-year-old, and with a class jockey hopping aboard in the form of Joshua Parr, we think a debut win is on the cards for Encantado.

Next Best at Wagga: Miss Faberge

Miss Faberge can best be described as a tease. She has all the ability of a stakes winner in waiting but just can’t seem to put it all together. She finally broke her maiden status to kick off the preparation and has since run bold races behind Toesonthenose at Newcastle on April 12, before finding herself in Listed company and running mid-field behind Street Gossip in the Princess Stakes at Doomben on April 22. She wasn’t disgraced in the latter performance but simply did too much wrong in transit to win. She steps back into BM66 company, which looks ideal for her to chalk up a second career win. Tom Sherry takes the reins, and if he can get Miss Faberge to begin evenly, she should be stalking her rivals throughout before producing her electric turn-of-foot late to score a much-deserved win.
