Kaleem Shah’s homebred American Gal (Concord Point–American Story, by Ghostzapper), winner of the 2017 GI Test S. and 2018 GI Humana Distaff S., has been retired from racing and will begin her career as a broodmare at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm, trainer Simon Callaghan announced via Twitter Tuesday. Called “one of the best horses we have had the privilege to train” by Callaghan, American Gal retires with an overall record of 5-1-1 from nine starts and earnings of $912,480.

American Gal began her career under the care of trainer Bob Baffert in 2016 and finished third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies S. and second in the GI Starlet S. She only raced twice for Callaghan in 2017, but made the most of it, winning both the GIII Victory Ride S. in July and the Test in August. She returned for her 4-year-old campaign with a fourth-place finish in the GI Madison S. at Keeneland in April–an effort that set her up for her victory in the Humana Distaff May 5. She was last seen finishing fifth in the GIII Bed o’Roses S. at Belmont June 8.

American Gal’s graded stakes-placed dam American Story is a half-sister to the popular G1SW Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown) and MGISW Seventh Street (Street Cry {Ire}). American Story is also responsible for Americanize, a SW & MGSP full-brother to American Gal.
