The Ballarat Turf Club is set to host their first synthetic track meeting of the year with an eight-race program set down for decision on Tuesday afternoon. A typical 12 degree with the odd shower is forecast, but we expect the track to play fairly, with the first race jumping at 1pm AEST. Below are our Ballarat race tips, best bets and quaddie picks for the May 9 meeting.

Best Bet at Ballarat: General Barca

General Barca is clearly above synthetic level, but the three-year-old colt from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace barn is void of confidence this preparation. He resumed in a competitive three-year-old event at Flemington when well in the market in a race dominated by the smart What You Need, before doing too much wrong at Pakenham in a disappointing midfield effort. His run in the Danehill Stakes during the spring is more than good enough to account for a field like this, an effort which saw him finish four-lengths off Giga Kick. From barrier two, look for John Allen to have General Barca settled midfield one off the rail and when asked for an effort, we expect he will simply be a class above this lot.

Best Bet

Race 6 – Silks#2 General Barca (2)

3yo Colt | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: John Allen (62kg)

$4 with Ladbrokes

Next Best at Ballarat: Numpty

With a bit of luck we can round out the day in style when Dan O’Sullivan’s Numpty steps out over the 1400m. He was a dominant four-length winner at Horsham on April 29 and on the quick back-up he looks hard to beat as he returns to the synthetics. He has a win and a minor placing from three cracks at this track and from barrier two draws to gain every advantage under apprentice Codi Jordan, who claims 2kg. With speed drawn directly outside of her, the five-year-old mare looks set to gain a run in the one-one and when asked for an effort, we hope Numpty can skip clear as she did last time out at Horsham.

Next Best

Race 8 – Silks#2 Numpty (2)

5yo Mare | T: Dan O’Sullivan | J: Codi Jordan (a2) (62kg)

$5.50 with Palmerbet

Best Value Tip at Ballarat: Harlem Jazz

In a race where many of the market fancies have their convictions, we are hoping we strike some value with the Mitch Freedman-trained Harlem Jazz. The three-year-old filly was forced to travel three wide with no cover on a Heavy 8 at Swan Hill on debut and stuck on well to be beaten by three-lengths, despite the horror run. With speed drawn underneath, look for Jarrod Fry to try and lob the Astern filly in the one-one and unlike her rivals, we’re hoping she can tick off her maiden early on in her career and in doing so, salute at a nice price with online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silks#8 Harlem Jazz (8)

3yo Filly | T: Mitchell Freedman | J: Jarrod Fry (57.5kg)

$8 with Bet365
