The New Zealand Equine Veterinary Association (NZEVA) has recently released an updated list of recommended withholding times (WHT) for prohibited substances applicable to harness and thoroughbred racing.  Refer to this link to view the NZEVA WHT list and guide: NZEVA Recommended Prohibited Substance Withholding Times and Guide

The purpose of the WHT list is to ensure that when a horse is treated by, or under, the supervision of a veterinarian, both owners and trainers have the confidence to compete in Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) or New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) trials or races with minimal risk of a positive test to a prohibited substance.

The WHT list provides an approximate guide only for horses tested in New Zealand by New Zealand Racing Laboratory Services Ltd

The WHT list is not a list of all prohibited substances nor all drugs that are tested by New Zealand Racing Laboratory Services Ltd. The WHT List is not endorsed by NZTR or HRNZ as a recommendation for any horse treated prior to racing. The WHT list applies to horses competing in NZTR and HRNZ races only and veterinarians need to consult with the New Zealand FEI veterinarian Dr Tony Parsons for horses competing in these events. This WHT list does not apply to greyhounds.

The information for the WHT list is derived from the best information at hand at the date of publication from the International Conference of Racing Analysts and Veterinarians (ICRAV), European Horserace Scientific Liaison Committee (EHSLC), AgriFutures Australia (formerly the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation) research and selected clinical peer reviewed papers.

Updating of information will be publicised on the NZVA website as it comes to hand.

Please contact your veterinarian for further information.
